Corns are thick, hardened layers of skin that develop when the skin tries to protect itself against friction or pressure. They often form on feet and toes, starting as a callus and then forming a deeper, more invasive collection of dead skin.

Signs and symptoms of corns may include:

A thick, rough area of skin
A hardened, raised bump
Tenderness or pain under the skin
Flaky, dry or waxy skin

Corns and calluses are not the same thing.

Corns are smaller and deeper than calluses and have a hard center surrounded by swollen skin. They can be painful when pressed. Hard corns often form on the top of the toes, the outer edge of the small toe, and quite often on the plantar portion (sole) of the foot when there is a loss of fat padding between prominent bones and skin. Soft corns tend to form between the toes.

Calluses are rarely as painful and tend to develop on pressure spots, such as the heels or the balls of the feet. They may vary in size and shape and are often larger than corns.

Safe treatment and removal of corns and calluses can offer instant relief. Treatment should be relatively painless and should not cause trauma to healthy, living tissue surrounding the corn or callus.

Let's talk about painful ingrown toenails:

Onychocryptosis is a painful condition where the side edges of a toenail deviate away from the regular growth pattern and imbed into the sulcii (side skin fold) of the nail causing acute pain, redness, swelling and sometimes even infection. A properly designed and fitted custom orthotic can prevent dangerous ulcers from forming on your feet. They can also help protect a previously compromised area, preventing a repeat ulceration.

This morning we fitted a soft, protective and effective set of orthoses for a client who has had a long battle with diabetic foot ulcerations. Sadly, after a two year long process (casts, clinic visits, homecare visits, hospitalizations) to get the ulcers healed, someone prescribed him hard and slippery orthoses that recreated a severe ulceration again.

It caused us to shake our heads, but thankfully he trusted us to help!

Happy Saturday everyone!

The storm spared us for the most part and we are here in the studio 10-4 today!

Thank you to our foot clinic guests who came from near and far this week to trust us with their foot care health!

In addition to our wonderful southwest Saskatchewan guests, we had folks see us at our Swift Current Clinic from Moose Jaw, Elrose, Delisle, Kindersley, Coronach, Brooks AB and Cranbrook BC!!

Why? Because THEY know WE know feet!
