New hope for healing skin grafts and flaps

A large 2026 review pooling 24 studies and 2,246 patients found that hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) may help support the healing and survival of skin grafts and flaps that are struggling to recover after surgery. The researchers gave a strong recommendation for using HBOT before and after surgery to support healing and possibly reduce the need for repeat procedures.

This finding comes from a 2026 systematic review and meta-analysis published in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, Global Open (PRS Global Open).

New Treatment Options for Life Threatening Skin Infections 🩺

A 2026 study published in Medical Gas Research looked at patients being treated for Fournier's gangrene, a serious infection. Researchers compared standard care (surgery and antibiotics) to standard care plus hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT).

The study pooled data from 13 studies and 688 patients. Adding HBOT was associated with a meaningfully higher survival rate, with no extra hospital time or added surgeries needed. 💪

HBOT for eligible conditions is OHIP covered. Ask your physician for a referral to Modern Medical Hyperbaric Clinic in Thunder Bay to see if this therapy may be right for you.

Our first Cancer Survivorship & Rehabilitation Education Evening was an overwhelming success. With this first session reaching capacity so quickly, we are committing to another next session on July 22nd. If you were unable to attend the first one, check the link below.

It was an incredible opportunity to connect with patients and their families. The presentation Dr Labine gave was well received, with questions from families and unique experiences from people at different places in their own recovery. People were eager to enjoy some snacks and tour the facility with our team.

First up: Dr. Meaghan Labine🩺👋

Born and raised in Red Lake, Ontario, Dr. Meaghan Labine has deep roots in Northern Ontario. Growing up, she spent her summers helping her family operate a fly-in fishing lodge, where she developed a strong work ethic, a love of the outdoors, and a passion for serving others.

Before pursuing medicine, Dr. Labine completed a Master of Science in Medical Biology and a PhD in Pharmacology and Therapeutics at the University of Manitoba. She then earned her medical degree from the Northern Ontario School of Medicine (NOSM) in Thunder Bay, followed by her Rural Family Medicine Residency through NOSM. Today, she practices Family and Emergency Medicine while continuing to champion innovation in healthcare across the North.

Dr. Labine is the Founder, CEO, and Medical Director of Modern Medical, home to Northwestern Ontario's first state-of-the-art Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT) facility featuring eight monoplace hyperbaric chambers. Her vision is to bring advanced therapies, innovative technologies, and world-class care closer to home for patients across the region. Whether she's developing new programs, supporting patients on their recovery journey, or dreaming up the next big healthcare initiative, she is driven by a simple goal: helping Northern communities thrive through better access to exceptional care.

Outside of medicine, Meaghan enjoys dancing, cooking, scuba diving, travelling, and exploring new places!

Dr. Labine had an exciting time meeting with The Princess Margaret Cancer Foundation’s ELLICSR (Exercise, Living with Cancer, and Clinical Survivorship Research) Program Director, Dr. Jennifer Jones and her incredible team.

They explored innovative approaches to cancer survivorship and rehabilitation and discussed opportunities to collaborate on bringing more recovery-focused services to Northwestern Ontario.

Cancer care doesn’t end when treatment is over. Recovery, rehabilitation, and restoring quality of life are critical parts of the journey. We’re excited to continue learning from leaders in survivorship care as we work to expand programs that help patients move beyond treatment and thrive.
