A post-weekend reality check: even with the best intentions, sunburns happen.
Maybe you forgot to reapply. Maybe the SPF was older than you thought. Maybe the sun was stronger than you expected on a cloudy patio.

If you came home a little pinker than you'd planned, here's what actually helps (and a few things that don't).

✔️ Cool compresses or a cool shower bring the temperature of the skin down and calm inflammation.
✔️ Fragrance-free moisturizer with ceramides, hyaluronic acid, or aloe is best. Apply generously while your skin is still damp.
✔️ Hydrate more than you think you need to, since sunburns pull fluid to the surface of the skin.
✔️ An anti-inflammatory like ibuprofen can reduce redness and discomfort in the first 24 hours, if appropriate for you.
✔️ And then: shade, and time. Let your skin heal.

What to skip, and why:
❌ Ice directly on skin can cause further damage to already injured tissue (keep it cool, not cold).
❌ Petroleum-based products trap heat on a fresh burn; wait until the skin has cooled fully.
❌ Don't exfoliate to speed up peeling, trust your skin do what it needs to do.
❌ Numbing sprays with benzocaine or lidocaine can cause irritation or allergic reactions on compromised skin.

A sunburned area needs to be covered or kept out of the sun entirely until it has healed.

Every sunburn is skin damage. The redness fades, but the cumulative effect doesn't. This isn't a guilt trip, it's a reminder that recovery matters, and so does prevention going forward.

If you've been managing melasma for years, you already know how frustrating it can be. It comes back, it shifts with the seasons and the wrong treatment can make it worse.

We see this often. Patients arrive at our clinic having spent time and money on various treatments, "brightening" products, or protocols that weren't right for their skin tone. This can mean that their melasma is now harder to treat than it was at the start.

Here's what we want you to know:
Melasma can be managed well. It usually can't be cured, but it can be calmed, lightened, and kept stable with the right plan. That plan looks different for every patient, and it almost always involves a combination of daily protection, targeted topicals, and, when appropriate, in-clinic treatments selected carefully for your skin type.

Dr. Yadav's clinical focus and research are centred on dermatology for skin of colour, which is the population most affected by melasma. That's why patients often come to FACET for this condition.

SPF is non-negotiable for every skin tone, including deeper ones.

The myth that melanin-rich skin doesn't need sun protection has done real damage. UV exposure contributes to premature aging, uneven tone, and post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation which is more common, more stubborn, and more visible in darker skin tones. Daily SPF is one of the most effective tools we have to prevent it.

The challenge has historically been formulation. Too many sunscreens leave a white cast on deeper skin, which makes daily wear a non-starter. The good news: that's changed.

A few of Dr. Yadav's go-tos:

☀️ Live Tinted Huegard SPF 30: it's hydrating, blurs imperfections, doubles as a makeup primer.

The question we hear more than almost any other when it comes to sun protection: how am I supposed to reapply SPF over a full face of makeup?
Fair question. The answer is simpler than most people expect.

1️⃣ Blot first to lift any excess oil.
2️⃣ Reach for a mineral SPF powder or a setting spray with SPF (both reapply cleanly over makeup).
3️⃣ Press the product in. Don't rub, or you'll disturb everything underneath.
4️⃣ Do this every two hours if you're outdoors. Less often indoors, but not never.

A few notes worth adding: powder and spray formats only count as protection when you apply enough, and most people under-apply both. Neither replaces your morning SPF; they extend it.

Not all lasers do the same thing.

Some target pigmentation. Some address redness and vascular concerns. Others, like the one Dr. Yadav is receiving here, work deeper, stimulating collagen and elastin production to improve skin quality, firmness, and texture over time.

That last category is where a lot of patients see the kind of long-term change they've been chasing with skincare alone. May is Skin Cancer Awareness Month, and a good time to remind you to get to know your own skin.

The ABCDEs are the framework dermatologists teach for a reason: they’re memorable, they’re useful, and they catch a lot of what matters. We’d encourage every patient to do a check at home every 2-3 months, ideally in good light and with a partner or mirror for the spots you can’t easily see.

If you notice something abnormal, be sure to book in with your doctor so they can check and refer you to a dermatologist if needed.
