Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD) is one of the most common disabilities in Canada, and also one of the least talked about.

Jason is a father and a caregiver in our community. His son Jack is 14, and he has FASD. Over the years, Jason has learned that the hardest part isn't just the disability, but the potential judgment that comes with it.

Because the word "alcohol" sits in the diagnosis, judgment can often arrive first without prior knowledge or understanding about FASD. That stigma can keep families quiet and keeps FASD misunderstood. For Jason and his wife this affects how he and his wife often leads with the fact that Jack is their adopted son.

Somewhere in all the appointments, the routines and making sure your child is supported, it can be easy to forget your own needs belong on the list too.

Respite Services give your child a fun day of arts and crafts, sensory play, group games, while giving you the time to rest and re-charge.

In every liquor store in Ontario, there's a small sign: a pregnant woman, a circle, a line through it. For most people, that sign is the beginning and the end of what they know about Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD).

Jason is a father and a caregiver in our community. His son Jack is 14, and he has FASD, a lifelong disability that affects the brain and looks different for everyone. It can affect memory, attention, learning, and the skills we all rely on to get through the day.

In this video, Jason explains what that looks like for Jack, and why he believes FASD deserves far more attention than a warning label.

Meet Jack. 💛

September is FASD Awareness Month, and this month we're sharing the story of one family.

Jack is 14. He loves music, basketball, and meeting new people. His dad, Jason, is a caregiver and a member of our community. Jack also has Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD), a lifelong disability that affects about 4% of people in Canada. That's more than autism, cerebral palsy, and Down syndrome combined, and yet most people know very little about it.

Throughout September, Jason will share what he's learned as Jack's dad, and what he wishes more people understood about FASD.

Last week, Microsoft Canada welcomed 28 Surrey Place clients and nine staff members to its Toronto office at CIBC Square to learn about workplace accessibility.

During the tour, the group learned how Microsoft supports employees with disabilities and asked questions about everything from accommodations for employees who are visually impaired, to training opportunities for people returning to the workforce.

The visit also included two guest speakers. One demonstrated how Copilot can help people with disabilities navigate the web and invited clients to try it themselves. The other joined by video from Brazil to share his experience working at Microsoft as a person with autism. One client later told us that hearing his story was a reminder to give others the benefit of the doubt.

We are grateful to Microsoft Canada for opening its doors, and we remain committed to building that same accessibility into the services and spaces we offer at Surrey Place.

As you might have heard, Surrey Place and the Ontario Public Service Employees’ Union (OPSEU) Local 511 reached a collective agreement, and the labour disruption ended as of August 26th.

We know there’s been significant disruption these past 3 months, and we are working to resume regular schedules as soon as possible. The timing of the resumption will vary depending on the service or program. We will be contacting clients and families directly by email or phone about the next steps for your service and programs. While we work towards resuming regular schedules, there might be some continued delays in response.

Thank you to the Honourable Wayne Long, MP for Saint John–Kennebecasis (SJ-K), Leslie Church, MP for Toronto–St. Paul's, and Danielle Martin, MD, MP for University–Rosedale, for inviting Surrey Place to join the pre-budget consultation on Disability in the Community ahead of the Government of Canada's Budget 2026.

Jeanny Scantlebury, Vice President of Adult Services at Surrey Place, joined a roundtable with other key organizations in the disability community to discuss major challenges and recommendations for better access to services, housing and support for individuals with IDD and their caregivers.

It was a valuable conversation, and one that reflected what we hear from the families we work with every day.

Surrey Place is grateful to have been part of this opportunity, and hope these priorities carry forward into real change for the families we support.
