Protein is having a moment – and yes, it’s everywhere right now. If you feel like you can’t scroll or sip a latte without hearing about it… you’re not wrong.

While it may seem like protein has suddenly taken over everything, the shift reflects a positive trend in health priorities away from weight loss and toward preserving muscle and supporting metabolic health.

And while the spotlight seems like a trend, the science isn’t.

Getting enough protein has always been essential to aging well. It helps maintain muscle, supports metabolic function and builds resilience over time.

But here’s a twist: some of your go-to carbohydrate‑rich foods can pull double duty.

In a recent Globe and Mail feature, Medcan’s Clinical Director of Food and Nutrition, Leslie Beck, shares six surprisingly high‑protein, carbohydrate‑rich foods to help you meet your daily targets in a more balanced, approachable way.

Earlier this week, Medcan’s Dr. Scott Gledhill joined John Moore on Newstalk 1010’s Moore in the Morning to discuss options for early cancer detection. Here’s the gist from their discussion:

Today, the options for cancer screening are limited. The cancers we can screen for are only screened individually – if screening exists at all. Some tests are invasive. Others involve radiation exposure. And many cancers still have no routine screening protocols.

That’s where new advancements are changing the conversation, and where Medcan is focusing on innovation, bringing new clinically validated solutions to Canada.

The conversation highlighted the Galleri test by GRAIL – a multi-cancer early detection test that screens for 50+ cancers with a single blood draw – to help detect a signal for cancer and where it’s located in the body, before symptoms appear.

Medcan is proud to be the exclusive provider of this test in Canada.

While it doesn’t replace existing screening, it helps fill critical gaps where early detection can make all the difference.

Effective July 1, the colorectal cancer screening age in Ontario will be lowered from 50 to 45.

At Medcan, this is a change we’ve been waiting for given there’s been a concerning rise in diagnoses among younger adults. Evidence also shows that earlier detection dramatically improves outcomes – with survival rates near 90% compared to less than 15% once the disease is more advanced.

We’ve long recommended screening at 45 because, as Medcan Clinical Director of Endoscopy, Dr. Axler, puts it, “We refuse to be late to the game if it will save lives.”

We also advocate for colonoscopy as the gold standard because it doesn’t just detect cancer – it can prevent it.

Read our article here: https://medcan.com/insights/ontario-lowers-colorectal-cancer-screening-age-to-45--a-positive-shift-medcan-has-long-championed/ to learn more about our perspective on these new guidelines and how to be proactive with colorectal cancer screening.

Because when comes to colorectal cancer, the bottom line, says Dr. Axler, is to “Go get screened, screen earlier and do the best screening test to prevent cancer.”

If there was one clear takeaway from our Beyond Hot Flashes webinar, it was this: when it comes to menopause and perimenopause, women have more questions than answers.

Ahead of the webinar, we received hundreds of questions from women who are looking for clarity and support. Then, during the session, we addressed some of the most common themes, with clinical insights and guidance from our women’s health experts, including Dr. Jennifer Zelovitzky, who leads our Menopause and Perimenopause program.

Here are three of the most common questions we tackled:

➡️ I feel like I’m doing everything I should, so why am I struggling to manage my weight?
➡️ I’m having skin issues and I’m losing my hair (help!) – is there anything I can do?
➡️ Can I take a hormone test to confirm I’m in perimenopause?

Swipe to learn how our experts addressed these topics.

To help answer these questions and many more about this life stage, we’ve developed two practical guides that will give you clinically grounded, trusted insights.

Medcan’s guide to perimenopause and our guide on Menopause Hormone Therapy (MHT) helps break through the misinformation and offer clarity on these important topics.

Jennifer was a high‑energy professional and athlete who trained regularly, did yoga, took care of her health, and competed in duathlons.

Then, in her late 40s, everything changed.

Debilitating fatigue. Brain fog. Night sweats. Low mood. For two years, she searched for answers – but nothing worked.

“I thought I might not be able to keep up at work,” she said.

Determined to find solutions, she kept pushing, and that search led her to a women’s health event where she heard about Medcan’s Menopause and Perimenopause Program.

She enrolled, and within a week of starting care, everything shifted. Her night sweats resolved. She started sleeping again. And slowly, she came back to life.

Jennifer went from feeling like she had the body of a 75-year-old to an even better version of her former self.

And she learned firsthand how the right care and working with an interdisciplinary team of experts who are menopause trained can change everything.

When it comes to metabolic diseases like diabetes, obesity and liver disease, there are biomarkers that can reveal early insight for future risk.

As part of our commitment to clinical excellence and innovation, we’ve expanded metabolic testing in our Annual Health Assessment to include three new biomarkers – fasting insulin, HOMA‑IR and uric acid.

Alongside other evaluations in the assessment, they can reveal early signs of insulin resistance and metabolic dysfunction – providing the opportunity for early intervention, even before symptoms appear.

To learn more about metabolic health and these key biomarkers, read our new guide: Three early signs of metabolic dysfunction: what fasting insulin, HOMA‑IR and uric acid reveal.
