For the past 15 years Ruby has delivered compassionate care to VHA clients through her role as a PSW. For her, going that extra mile means building meaningful relationships and bonding through conversation. She especially appreciates the laughter and stories they share together.

“It’s rewarding to know that my work help improve my client’s quality of life,” says Ruby. “The gratitude and trust I receive from clients and their families provides me with a strong sense of fulfillment and purpose.”

Ruby also gets to share her knowledge with the next generation of care providers as a coach, preceptor and mentor. “I love assisting staff in problem-solving/ critical thinking in challenging situations and help build their confidence,” she says.

Working at VHA has given Ruby the unique opportunity to continue her own learning while being part of a strong team and supporting the development of others.

Through WorkSmart, VHA team members can receive financial assistance for education and professional development. From supporting Poonam’s journey to becoming a Revenue Cycle Manager to helping Nicole advance into her role of Director, Digital Transformation & Adoption, WorkSmart has helped turn educational goals into career opportunities.

The Head Start Scholarship program provides financial support to the children of VHA staff and care service providers pursuing post-secondary education. Since 2012, Head Start has awarded more than $526,000 in scholarships to support the next generation.

Jennifer has been an invaluable member of our senior leadership team and has played a crucial role managing the financial operations of the organization, consistently balancing financial stability and maximizing our services. Her vision and drive have been key factors in our growth. She is deeply committed to our people – both our providers and those we serve - an incredibly effective accountant who is passionate about supporting those who need it most.

We are grateful that Jennifer will remain with VHA until March 2027 and we wish her much happiness going forward.

VHA Home HealthCare is proud to be recognized as a Best Practice Spotlight Organization (BPSO) by the Registered Nurses' Association of Ontario (RNAO). As a BPSO, we’ve successfully implemented RNAO Best Practice Guidelines (BPGs) such as delivering person- and family-centred care (PFCC).

What is person- and family-centred care? For VHA home-care specialists like Brydne Edwards, it’s a philosophy. “It means seeing clients, families and their caregivers as partners in care,” says Brydne. “This philosophy is embedded at every organizational level, from direct one-on-one communication with care providers, coordinators and the leadership team, to designing new programs and updating or creating policies.”

Ultimately, it’s about respecting and responding to the needs and preferences of clients and the people who care for them with genuine curiosity and empathy.

Meet Kester, a Care Team Supervisor in our Toronto Central team. She works closely with coordinators and PSWs to ensure our clients get the right care at the right time.

When asked why she chose this career, her answer is an easy one. “This profession is very dear to my heart, as I have been a caregiver for most of my life,” explains Kester. “Supporting others and making a positive difference in their lives has always been my passion.”

Since joining VHA around 10 months ago, her favourite part of her job has been developing strong relationships with her colleagues. She quickly learned just how supportive and caring her team at VHA was. “One of my favorite memories has been seeing colleagues come together to support each other during challenging situations and celebrate successes as a team,” says Kester. “These moments reflect the strong culture of teamwork and dedication that makes VHA such a rewarding place to work.”
