Pregnancy and Infant Loss Remembrance Day | October 15

Today, we honor the babies gone too soon and hold space for the families navigating the profound loss of a pregnancy or infant.

For Black women and birthing individuals, experiences of loss may be compounded by inequities in healthcare, barriers to culturally responsive support, and experiences of not feeling heard, understood, or adequately cared for. Every family deserves compassionate, respectful care that acknowledges their grief and honors their experience.

At BREATHE Midwives, we recognize that reproductive health includes not only pregnancy and birth, but also loss, grief, and healing. We remain committed to advancing culturally responsive care and advocating for Black birthing individuals and families to receive the dignity, understanding, and support they deserve.

Today, we remember. We honor. We stand alongside families whose babies will always be part of their stories. πŸ’™

Periods are normal. Access to menstrual products and reliable information should be, too. πŸ’™

Following International Day of the Girl Child this past weekend, we’re continuing the conversation by highlighting the importance of menstrual health, body literacy, and breaking the stigma surrounding periods.

Period poverty remains a barrier in Canada. A 2023 federal survey found that 17% of menstruating respondents reported experiencing period poverty. When menstrual products are out of reach, managing a period can become a source of stress, discomfort, and exclusion.

Every young person deserves accurate information about their body, the confidence to ask questions, and access to the products and support they need, without shame.

At BREATHE Midwives, we believe access to information, culturally responsive care, and community support matters. πŸ’™

BREATHE FOR THE BRAIN. πŸ§ πŸ’™

Mental health is part of sexual, reproductive, maternal and infant health.

At BREATHE Midwives, we believe care should recognize the whole person. Physical health and emotional well-being are connected, and both deserve attention, understanding and support throughout the reproductive journey.

As we recognize World Mental Health Day, we also want to acknowledge that tomorrow is Black Girl Day Off β€” a reminder that Black girls and women deserve space to rest, recharge and prioritize their well-being amid the weight of racism, societal pressures and expectations to always keep going.

Rest is not selfish, and asking for support is not a weakness. We all deserve care, connection and space to breathe.

πŸ’™ Looking for support? BREATHE Midwives offers a Peer Connection Group, and our resource page connects you with community organizations and resources for mental wellness, sexual and reproductive health, and more.

The evidence is clear. The work must continue. πŸ–€

A study published in the Canadian Medical Association Journal (CMAJ) examined nearly 1.5 million births in Canada between 2012 and 2023, excluding Quebec. Researchers found that Black people had 1.66 times the adjusted odds of severe maternal morbidity compared with White people.

Severe maternal morbidity refers to serious, potentially life-threatening complications during pregnancy, delivery, or the postpartum period. These complications can have lasting consequences for individuals and families.

Understanding these disparities is only the beginning. We must also address barriers to care, listen to patients, and ensure people's experiences and needs are taken seriously.

BREATHE Midwives is a Black-led registered charity advancing sexual, reproductive, maternal, and infant health through culturally responsive care, education, and advocacy.

WE HAVE THE DATA. AND IT MATTERS.

For years, Black communities have spoken about the inequities they experience in healthcare. BREATHE Midwives has spoken about these inequities too, because they are not new to the communities we serve.

Now, new research is adding important evidence to what so many have already been saying.

A study published in the Canadian Medical Association Journal (CMAJ) found that Black women in Canada faced a 66% higher risk of severe maternal health complications compared with non-Black women.

Researchers examined nearly 1.5 million births between 2012 and 2023, providing important evidence of racial inequities in maternal health across Canada.

This data matters. It helps make disparities visible, strengthens the evidence for change, and gives us a clearer picture of what Black communities have been experiencing.

But evidence is only the beginning.

The question is no longer whether these inequities exist. The question is what we do about them.

We’ll be talking more about that in our next post.

TRUTH MUST LEAD TO ACTION. 🧑

Today, BREATHE Midwives stands in solidarity and allyship with First Nations, Inuit, and MΓ©tis communities across Turtle Island.

On the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, we honour the Survivors of residential schools, the children who never returned home, and the families and communities who continue to carry the impacts of this history.

Truth and reconciliation cannot be limited to one day of remembrance. It calls on all of us to listen, learn, reflect, and take meaningful action β€” including recognizing and confronting the inequities and systemic racism that continue to affect Indigenous Peoples today.

As a Black-led organization committed to health equity, culturally responsive care, and advocacy, we recognize that meaningful solidarity requires ongoing learning, supporting Indigenous-led work, and showing up with respect, humility, and accountability.

We also recognize that health equity and reconciliation are connected. Creating more equitable health systems requires us to listen to communities, acknowledge the harms caused by systemic racism, and support meaningful change.

Today, we remember.
Today, we listen.
And every day, we commit to doing the work.

🧑 Every Child Matters.

A day for community. A day for connection. A day for BREATHE. πŸ’›

This summer, BREATHE Midwives brought our community together for our Community Block Party β€” creating space to connect, share resources, learn, and celebrate.

We welcomed families, community members, speakers, exhibitors, volunteers, and supporters who all brought something meaningful to the day.

πŸ–€ We shared resources.
πŸ–€We created space for conversation.
πŸ–€ We built connections.
πŸ–€ We celebrated community.

Even when unexpected weather changed some of our plans, it didn’t change why we gathered.

At BREATHE Midwives, we believe Black birthing individuals, infants, and families deserve care, resources, education, and support that recognize and respond to their experiences.

The Block Party was one day β€” but the work continues.

Thank you to everyone who showed up, shared, supported, and helped us build something together.
