**Workshop Spotlight #2: Chris Lively**

How we talk about mental health matters.

At CMHS 2026, Chris Lively, Assistant Professor at St. Francis Xavier University in Antigonish, Nova Scotia, will lead the workshop:

**The Language of Mental Health Literacy**

This workshop will help churches grow in mental health literacy by exploring how language, assumptions, expectations, and silence can shape congregational culture.

Many faith communities care deeply about people, yet may unintentionally communicate that mental health struggles should stay private, be quickly resolved, or be addressed only in spiritual terms. This session invites participants to notice these patterns with compassion and curiosity.

Together, we’ll consider how churches can become safer, more informed places for honesty, support, and meaningful care.

This is an important workshop for pastors, ministry leaders, care teams, and anyone who wants to help create a church culture where people feel less alone and more understood.

Join us at CMHS 2026 as we continue the conversation of making mental wellness a lifestyle.

Workshop Spotlight: Meet Chris Ivany (Lead Pastor, Rock Church) & Spencer Conway (Kids Pastor, Rock Church)

Title:
When Su***de Hits Home: A Conversation on Grief, Faith, and Pastoral Care

Workshop Description:
Su***de impacts more people in our churches than we often realize. Yet many pastors, leaders, and congregants feel unprepared when tragedy strikes.
In this workshop, Pastor Spencer Conway and Pastor Chris Ivany share their lived experience following the su***de of Spencer's brother, Garret. Through honest storytelling and reflection, they explore what helped, what hurt, what they learned, and how churches can care for individuals, families, and congregations navigating su***de loss. This workshop offers a personal and pastoral perspective intended to help church leaders respond with greater compassion, wisdom, and hope while creating space for more conversations about mental health in our churches.

This is an important conversation for pastors, ministry leaders, care teams, and anyone who longs to see the Church become a safer place for people carrying deep pain.

Join us at CMHS 2026 as we continue the conversation of making mental wellness a lifestyle.

What is mental health or wellness?

Mental health/wellness is not perfection. It is staying rooted and flexible. It is the ability to adjust, recover, and keep growing.

Good mental health doesn't mean you won't have problems, or won't struggle sometimes.

Good mental health helps us:

notice what we are feeling
recover after stress
adapt when plans/life change
stay connected to others
ask for support
keep hope alive
find our way back after hard moments

Mental health is the care of our inner world: our thoughts, emotions, stress, relationships, and ability to cope. Just like physical health, it needs attention, support, and daily care.

Need support? Call: (902)893-3991 or Email: [email protected].

Let us journey with you as you make your mental health and wellness a lifestyle!

🎙️ **CMHS Conversation: Why is Archway hosting the Church Mental Health Summit?**

**Q: Why is Archway hosting the CMHS?**
Because mental health is already part of the life of the Church.

People in our congregations are carrying anxiety, grief, depression, burnout, trauma, loneliness, family stress, and questions of faith and hope. The question is not whether mental health belongs in the Church—the question is how we can learn to respond with more compassion, wisdom, and care.

At Archway, we believe mental wellness is not just a program churches add. It is a culture we learn to embody.

**Q: What do we hope attendees will take away from this two-day event?**
We hope pastors, staff, ministry leaders, volunteers, counsellors, and community members leave feeling encouraged, equipped, and less alone.

We hope attendees walk away with:
✔️ a deeper understanding of mental health and faith
✔️ language that reduces shame and stigma
✔️ practical tools for supporting people in real-life struggles
✔️ renewed imagination for creating emotionally safe church communities
✔️ meaningful conversations that continue long after the summit ends

**Q: What can attendees expect?**
CMHS 2026 is a live, in-person two-day event featuring Daniel Whitehead from Sanctuary Mental Health, Vancouver, along with multiple local and Canadian workshop speakers.

**Thursday:** A free pastoral/staff leader gathering with Daniel Whitehead

**Friday:** A full-day summit with live, in-person plenary and workshop speakers, practical learning, conversation, lunch, and connection

Three incredible experiences!

A Pastors & Staff Leaders Luncheon
Thursday Evening Community Event
Full Summit (multiple, in-person, workshop speakers)

Someone in your church is carrying anxiety.

Someone is grieving.

Someone is exhausted.

Someone feels ashamed to talk about their mental health.

They are already here.

The question isn't whether mental health belongs in the Church.

The question is how are we creating safe spaces to talk about it.

Join us at CMHS 2026 for a conversation about making mental wellness a lifestyle, not just a program, but a culture we embody.
