This month, we’re raising awareness of Arthritis 🌻

Arthritis is a term used to describe conditions that affect the joints and can cause symptoms such as pain, stiffness, swelling and difficulty with movement. For some people, these experiences and support needs may not be immediately visible, and they can vary from day to day.

An estimated 607 million people globally are living with osteoarthritis, making it one of the most common musculoskeletal conditions globally. And around 17.6 million people are living with rheumatoid arthritis.

Arthritis isn’t “just for older people.”

On the Sunflower Conversations podcast Marc Williams, Arthritis Action shares how arthritis can affect people at any age. And because it’s often invisible, many people living with arthritis are left having to explain their pain, fatigue, or need for support.

There are over 100 types of arthritis, including osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis. Symptoms can include pain, swelling, stiffness, and joints that feel hot or red.

A new school year brings new routines, environments and expectations — and a good opportunity for school communities to understand the Hidden Disabilities Sunflower.

The Sunflower is a voluntary tool that allows a child or young person to indicate that they may need additional time, understanding or support, without having to repeatedly explain or disclose their disability or condition.

We’ve put together a guide for families, children and school staff covering what the Sunflower means in a school setting, how to respond when someone wears it, and why recognising non-visible disabilities and support needs matters.

🌻Announcing a major milestone for inclusive travel.

Global Ports Holding (GPH) the world's largest cruise port operator, has launched the Hidden Disabilities Sunflower across its global network of 35 cruise ports in 20 countries.

With more than 22 million passengers travelling through its ports each year, GPH has trained teams across its network to recognise the Sunflower and support passengers with non-visible disabilities and conditions through greater understanding, extra time and additional assistance when needed.

Building on the success of Nassau Cruise Port, the first GPH port to introduce the Sunflower, this global rollout demonstrates GPH's commitment to creating more accessible, welcoming and inclusive travel experiences for everyone.

GPH is providing Sunflower lanyards free to passengers with non-visible disabilities to ensure they feel seen, valued, and supported.
