Our Pick this month is from Connecte Montreal Psychology clinical psychologist, Dr. Maggie Harris!
Maggie offers her recommendation to two episodes from the very cool psychoanalytic podcast, Lives of the Unconscious :

"The podcast ‘Lives of the Unconscious’, hosted by two European psychoanalysts, is a great resource for learning psychodynamic conceptualizations of a wide range of emotional experiences and disorders.
I found Episode 29, “The Anorexic Dynamic: Or Why Eating Disorders Are Not About the Food,” was especially helpful in my work with one patient. It deepened my understanding of how her eating disorder developed as a form of self-protection from her parents, since reduced food intake meant less reliance on them.
I also recommended episode 28, “Malignant Narcissism: A Reservoir of Hatred and Violence”, to another patient who was struggling to form a connection with her mother with narcissism. The hosts present complex psychoanalytic ideas in a clear and accessible way, which I really appreciated for myself as well as for recommending to others."

Food for thought! Thanks Maggie 🫶

A sweet treat of a Pick this month from Connecte Montreal Psychology's own therapist and PhD Candidate, Kayla Hollett! Kayla's share is from renowned mindfulness-based stress reduction pioneer, Jon Kabat-Zinn :

"As my Pick for June, I would like to recommend one of my favourite books entitled, "Wherever You Go, There You Are: Mindfulness Meditation in Everyday Life" by Jon Kabat-Zinn. This book describes the premise of mindfulness as a way of living and expands the definition of the practice beyond structured meditation. Readers learn how to move away from living on "automatic pilot" and experience life's moments (and emotions) exactly as they are. I especially enjoy this book's calming tone, which creates a sense of practicing mindfulness while reading the book itself.

Jon Kabat-Zinn created Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR), which strongly influenced Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT). Both interventions have been found to be therapeutic for problems including recurrent depression, anxiety, stress, and chronic pain. Many of the elements emphasized in these treatments can be found embedded throughout this book, which may be particularly helpful for those who want to learn about mindfulness from an accessible resource."

Thanks Kayla!🙏☯

Evolution has given us a natural disposition to look for the negative to keep us safe from danger...super-helpful if we're being hunted by lions! But we can see some of that natural tendency as no longer helpful in the our current evolutionary context. Fortunately, the brain can be trained to look for positive information too. Montreal Psychology clinical psychologist Dr Lisa Astrologo explores how the power of gratitude can help (re)train our brains, and contribute to creating a more balanced view of our world 🦁🙏

Connecte Montreal Psychology's fabulous May Pick is here, from Connecte clinical psychologist Dr Lisa Astrologo! Lisa invites us explore a super helpful resource for trauma survivors, therapists, and indeed anyone seeking effective tools for trauma recovery:

" My pick for May is a workbook by Janina Fisher Ph.D. called “Transforming the Living Legacy of Trauma”. This is a resource I return to often in my work and frequently recommend.
What makes this workbook so impactful is Dr. Fisher’s ability to translate complex concepts into language that feels clear, digestible, and genuinely approachable. It helps people make sense of their symptoms, emotional reactions, and behavioural patterns through a trauma informed lens. Knowledge and understanding of one’s behaviour can be incredibly anchoring in trauma work. When someone can identify and understand why they feel or respond the way that they do, it often reduces shame, increases self-compassion, and builds confidence in their ability to navigate experiences that can be challenging.
In the workbook, this is done by guiding the reader through theory, step-by-step interventions, and worksheets that can easily evolve with an individual regardless of where they are in their process, which is what makes it such a practical resource for both survivors and therapists. " Thanks Lisa! 🙏

Transforming the Living Legacy of Trauma: A Workbook for Survivors and Therapists by Janina Fisher PESI Publishing & Media, 2020

Traumatic experiences leave a “living legacy” of effects that often persist for years and decades after the events are over. Historically, it has always been assumed that re-telling the story of what happened would resolve these effects. However, survivors report a different experience: Telling....

Closing out the month of April with a beautiful share from Connecte Montreal Psychology clinical psychologist Leanne D. Rondeau! Leanne shares links to discussions on self-compassion with the inimitable Chris Irons :

'These excerpts from a recent interview with Dr. Chris Irons outline how learning how to relate and care for ourselves in a more compassionate way, understand ourselves and being able to reassure ourselves and compassionately accompany ourselves on our life’s journey are some of the ways therapy can help alleviate our suffering.
Dr. Irons is a founding member of The Compassionate Mind Foundation UK and, along with Elaine Beaumont, has authored books on Compassion Focused Therapy and developed The Self Compassion App.'

How do parenting couples stay connected? Is it reserved for the lucky ones with the easiest babies, or the most babysitters? Although those things can help (!), it is most often couples who keep returning to a few key basics - fondness, shared enjoyment, and feeling seen - that stay connected even as family life gets hectic. Read on as Connecte Montreal Psychology clinical psychologist Dr Tobey Mandel shares realistic ways to build that connection, without pretending we have endless time, money, childcare, or energy 🫶🌱
