If Team Canada played in the World Cup match and chose not to put all their players on the field, you’d scratch your head. But that’s exactly what Team Manitoba is doing in their battle to ensure everyone has access to primary care. Pharmacists are trained to provide primary care and can help the 130,000 Manitobans who don’t have access to care but the provincial government is keeping them on the bench. Meanwhile, every other province has put them in the game!

If the Blue Bombers chose not to put all their players on the field, you’d scratch your head. Why would a team not use all of its talent to win the game? But that’s exactly what Team Manitoba is doing in their battle to ensure everyone has access to primary care. Pharmacists are trained to provide primary care and can help the 130,000+ Manitobans who still don’t have access to care but the provincial government is keeping them on the bench. Meanwhile, every other province has put them in the game!

While 130,000+ Manitobans don’t have access to primary care, health advocates are urging the provincial government to expand the scope of practice and public coverage for Pharmacists so they can use their training to provide a variety of primary care services. Manitoba must catch up to every other province already doing this as part of a universal, publicly-funded healthcare system!

Our seniors deserve better and more convenient access to primary care. Pharmacists are trained to provide excellent primary care but the provincial government won’t let them use all their skills and training. Let’s help our seniors – and every Manitoban – by expanding Pharmacists’ scope of practice just like every other province!

If the Jets played short-handed even though they didn’t have a penalty, you’d probably scratch your head about what the coach was thinking. There are still at least 130,000 Manitobans who don’t have access to primary care, and Pharmacists are trained to fill that void, but the provincial government keeps them on the bench. Manitoba is playing short-handed! Let’s expand the scope of practice for Pharmacists to match other provinces and help patients with better, more convenient access to care!

We are celebrating pharmacy with stories about the work teams are accomplishing to improve Manitobans' access to health care across the province. Today's feature, Dr. Robert Ar**no, PharmD, BCPS, FCCM, shares his experiences as a critical care pharmacist at and teaching learners at .

Dr. Ar**no would like to see all pharmacists in Manitoba practice to their full education. When pharmacists and physicians colleagues collaborate, patient care benefits. But reducing administrative barriers, such as awaiting faxes or signatures, requires system-level support!

He wishes every Manitoban knew that they can talk to their pharmacists about their medication concerns—whether in community, primary care, or hospital settings.
From supporting safe and effective medication use to preventing drug‑related problems, pharmacists improve healthcare for Manitobans every day!
