In our last Brave Hearts session, we asked our children a simple but powerful question:

“How do you describe Brave Hearts?”

Every child echoed the same sentiment: Brave Hearts is more than an organisation, it is a place of love, support, and belonging.

Many shared how the care, stability, and encouragement they receive here positively impact not only their own lives, but also the wellbeing of their families. Their confidence, hope, and smiles remind us of what is possible when children feel safe, valued, and supported.

Yesterday, as we celebrate Global Day of Parents and families around the world, we are especially grateful to Dean Hanson and The Hanson Family Foundation for the unwavering support that has made this journey possible. For the past decade, your generosity and belief in our children have helped create a safe haven where young people can grow, thrive, and dream about their future.

The voices of our children tell the story better than we ever could: Brave Hearts is family.

Thank you for standing beside our children and their families. Your legacy lives in every smile, every milestone, and every child who knows they are valued, loved, and never left behind.

We were honoured to attend the Africa Day Australia Gala at the Melbourne Convention Centre, a vibrant celebration of culture, unity, diversity, and community spirit, marking the founding of the African Union.

It was a proud moment for the Brave Hearts Ethiopia team to be part of such an inspiring event and to have our organisation acknowledged alongside those making a positive impact in our communities.

We would also like to extend our heartfelt congratulations to Dr Tesfaye Yigzawe, President of the Ethiopian community association in Victoria, on receiving the prestigious Community Achievement Award.

This recognition reflects his dedication, leadership, and ongoing contribution to the Ethiopian and broader African community in Victoria. His collaborative leadership and commitment to inclusivity have created a meaningful and lasting impact.

Dr Tesfaye has also consistently supported community organisations, including BHE, to help strengthen partnerships and community connections.

Congratulations on this well-deserved achievement, Dr Tesfaye. We wish you continued success in your service and leadership.

Thank you to Africa Day Australia for another memorable event and to everyone who continues to strengthen and uplift our communities.

Meet Ruth 💛

Ruth is a bright 4th grader who loves science, physical education, traditional dance, and painting. She dreams of becoming an artist one day, and her friends describe her as kind and polite.

Living with her grandmother, Ruth says she finds great joy at Brave Hearts Ethiopia, where daily tutorial support has helped improve her language skills and academic performance. Her favorite part of the program is the Saturday sessions, where she enjoys openly discussing meaningful topics with her friends.

Ruth’s grandmother is her biggest inspiration because of her strength and kindness. Ruth continues to grow into a confident and creative young girl with dreams for the future.

Friendship & Conflict Resolution 💛

This week, our younger and older children explored friendship and conflict resolution through thoughtful and engaging discussions.

Abel shared, “በጥሩም በመጥፎም ጊዜ ከጎናችን አንዲሆኑ እና የሚያስጭንቀኝን ነገር ለማወያየት እና መፍትሄ ለመፈለግ ይጠቅማል” “To have someone by your side in both good and difficult times, and to find solutions together.”

Birukitawit added, “ብቻችንን ሆነን የምንፈታው ነገር ስለሌለ ያለብንን ክፍተት በመሙላት ሙሉ ሰው ለመሆን”
“We cannot solve everything on our own, so friends help make us whole.”

Abraham spoke about staying calm and talking through conflicts, while Muna shared the importance of apologizing, understanding one another, and remaining friends.

It was inspiring to witness the children’s honesty, empathy, and emotional maturity.

In a bitter sweet moment we said farewell to Rakeb, our volunteer. What started as English lessons turned into something much deeper, moments of laughter, learning, and connection.

The kids not only grew their confidence, they genuinely looked forward to every lesson with her. As Rakeb shared, it was their energy and eagerness to learn that made her time so special.

The children sent her off with thoughtful gifts and heartfelt messages, and the team celebrated her with a certificate of appreciation.
