Anatomical Structure of Oropharynge

At the superior aspect, the Eustachian tube connects the nasopharynx to the middle ear, playing a key role in pressure equalization. Adjacent to it is the pterygoid hamulus, a bony hook that acts as a pulley for the tensor veli palatini, allowing it to tense the soft palate and assist in opening the Eustachian tube during swallowing.
The levator veli palatini elevates the soft palate, sealing off the nasopharynx during swallowing and speech to prevent nasal regurgitation. The uvula, suspended from the soft palate, contributes to this closure and also plays a role in speech resonance.
On the lateral walls, the palatopharyngeus muscle forms part of the posterior pillar of the fauces and helps elevate the pharynx while guiding the food bolus downward. The palatoglossus, forming the anterior pillar, connects the soft palate to the tongue and regulates the opening between the oral cavity and oropharynx.
Between these arches lies the palatine tonsil, part of Waldeyer’s ring, which provides immunological defense against inhaled and ingested pathogens.
The tongue, shown prominently, is essential for articulation, mastication, and propulsion of food during the oral phase of swallowing. Inferiorly, the hyoglossus muscle connects the tongue to the hyoid bone, depressing and retracting the tongue. The hyoid bone itself serves as a central anchoring structure for multiple muscles involved in swallowing and airway maintenance, despite having no direct bony articulations.
Overall, this image illustrates how coordinated muscle actions in this region ensure safe swallowing, effective speech, and proper airway protection, making it a critical anatomical zone in both normal physiology and clinical practice.
