Major football tournaments bring people together, but for some, they also bring increased risk of domestic abuse.
Domestic abuse can escalate during high-profile matches. Research and local data consistently show that incidents of domestic abuse rise around major men’s football events, with reports increasing by around 25% following matches - regardless of whether the team wins, loses or draws.
Domestic abuse can affect anyone and is not always physical. It can include emotional or psychological abuse, controlling or coercive behaviour, financial abuse, threats and intimidation.
Together, we can make a difference. Football should be something everyone can enjoy safely. By raising awareness, looking out for one another, and knowing where to turn, we can help reduce harm and support those who need it most.
