On the final day of National Eye Health Week, we’re focusing on Ageing Eyes.

As we grow older, clear sight is key to staying independent, active, and connected:

Fall Prevention: Good depth perception and correct lens prescriptions significantly reduce the risk of trips and falls at home.

Brain Health: Research shows that treating uncorrected vision loss helps maintain cognitive health and social engagement.

Cataracts & Glaucoma: Regular monitoring ensures conditions are caught early when treatment is most effective.

For over 75 years, Mackey Opticians has cared for generations of families across Northern Ireland. Whether for yourself or an older relative, book a comprehensive, friendly eye test with our trusted team today.

Experience Life Through a Lens with complete clarity and personal style! 👓✨

Today we celebrate the intersection of optical innovation and frame design. Lenses have evolved dramatically from thin, high-index materials that eliminate thick edges to smart light-intelligent lenses that seamlessly adapt from indoor light to outdoor sunshine.

Our practices pair precision optics with carefully curated frame collections suited to every personality from classic British styling to designer fashion labels like GUESS, Lacoste, and Ray-Ban.

Stop by your local Mackey Opticians branch today to explore our autumn frame collections and speak with our dispensing opticians about your tailored lens options.

Happy Self-care Fr-eye-day! 💆‍♀️👁️
Give your eyes the break they deserve with these simple daily resets:

Practice the 20-20-20 Rule: Every 20 minutes of digital work, gaze at an object 20 feet away for at least 20 seconds.

Adjust Your Workplace Setup: Position your computer monitor at arm's length, slightly below eye level, to reduce lid exposure and dry eye.

Hydrate: Maintain fluid intake throughout the workday to keep your ocular surface comfortable.

If computer work consistently leaves you with headaches or fatigued eyes, ask our dispensing staff about tailored anti-reflective screen coatings and occupational lenses.

Today’s National Eye Health Week theme is Live Well to See Well.
Healthy daily habits protect your body and your eyes!

Simple lifestyle choices directly influence long-term retinal health:

Nutrition for Vision: Leafy greens (kale, spinach) contain lutein and zeaxanthin, natural antioxidants that protect the macula.

Smoking & Eye Health: Smoking doubles the risk of developing Age-related Macular Degeneration (AMD) and accelerates cataract growth.

NI Weather UV Care: Overcast sky? UV rays still pe*****te cloud cover. Prescription lenses with full UV400 protection are essential all year round across Northern Ireland.

Need advice on UV-blocking prescription lenses or sun clips? Pop into practice to chat with our dispensing team!

Are your eyes feeling gritty, burning, or watery by 3 PM?
You aren't alone!

Dry Eye Syndrome is one of the most common issues patients bring to our consulting rooms.

Modern routines and changing physiology heavily impact tear quality:

Screen Strain: Working at screens reduces natural blink rates by over 50%.

Hormonal Shifts: Menopause and aging naturally reduce eye lubrication.

Lens Wearers: Dehydrated contact lenses can cause end-of-day discomfort.

At Mackey Opticians, we don't just recommend off-the-shelf eye drops. We offer dedicated dry eye assessments to pinpoint whether your lipid or watery tear layer is depleted, providing tailored treatments and heat-mask regimens for long-lasting relief.

Book a specialized dry eye consultation with your local Mackey optometrist this week.

It’s Children’s Eye Health Day!
Eye health is fundamental to giving children the best start in life.

Up to 80% of a child’s learning is visual. Yet, kids rarely complain about difficulty seeing they simply assume everyone sees the world the way they do!
Undetected vision issues can impact reading progress, coordination, and classroom confidence.

What every parent should know:

Children don't need to know their alphabet to have a thorough eye test. We recommend a childs first eye exam can be as early as 3 years old.

100% Free on NHS: Sight tests are completely free for all children under 16 (and under 19 in full-time education).

Kid-friendly frames: We stock durable, stylish frames designed specifically for younger faces, including flexible and sports-friendly options.

Bring your little ones in for an enjoyable, friendly eye check with our team.

Welcome to National Eye Health Week 2026!
Today, we’re spotlighting Primary Eye Care Services and what they mean for you and your family.

A visit to Mackey Opticians is much more than a prescription check.
Our advanced 3D OCT retinal imaging allows our optometrists to look beneath the surface of your eye, helping detect early signs of glaucoma, macular degeneration, diabetes, and high blood pressure before symptoms even appear.

SUDDEN EYE PROBLEM? SKIP A&E.

Through the NHS NI PEARS (Northern Ireland Primary Eyecare Assessment and Referral Service), if you experience a sudden painful red eye, unexpected floaters, or sudden vision loss, you can be examined free of charge by our accredited optometrists.

📞 Call your local Mackey Opticians practice immediately if you need emergency triage under NI PEARS.
