On 29 June, mobile phones officially became illegal in England’s classrooms. Not “please put it away,” actual law. From September, every state school has to be phone-free by default, and Ofsted will be checking.

Good news, honestly. Early data from similar bans shows phone use in class dropping from 61% to 13% in three years. Kids are actually putting them down.

But here’s the catch nobody’s talking about: the law stops at the school gate. The second the bell goes at 3:30, there’s no policy, no Ofsted, no pouch. Just homework competing with a group chat, and a phone buzzing through dinner.
