George Scott Funeral Services

George Scott Funeral Services Family-run funeral directors serving Bournemouth, Poole and beyond. Sensitive, personal, attention to detail support - always here when you need us.

A brief history...
In 1899, Bournemouth was at the peak of its fastest period of growth in its history; the train had not long arrived, and a population explosion saw the town expand from just 695 residents in 1851 to more than 60,000 by the turn of the century. It was against this backdrop that George Henry Scott established in 1899 what was to become one of the area's leading funeral directors. The company was, in 1914, honoured with the contract to carry out the funerals of members of the armed forces who had died within the Borough during the 1914-1918 conflict, an honour that was repeated in 1939-1945, and a sure sign of the esteem and respect this family-run funeral service had already established even at this early stage. George was joined by his son Harold in 1928 and Harold's wife Lettice joined after their marriage. They were succeeded in 1965 by their son Hugh, who, together with his wife Judith, set about expanding the company, the main highlight of which was the opening, in 1986, of a second funeral home in Kinson to serve the northern part of the borough and neighbouring Poole, Ferndown and Wimborne. Hugh and Judith's second son, Neil, joined the family funeral service in 1989, the fourth generation of the Scott family to uphold the family tradition, instigating further expansion in 1999 with the refurbishment of all the company's premises and the construction of two brand new, state-of-the-art chapels in Wimborne Rd. From the outset, George Scott's goal has been to make what is, after all, one of the most difficult, painful and daunting times for anyone – the loss of a loved one – just that little bit easier through kindness, warmth, consideration, sensitivity and sheer professionalism. We aim to put you at ease and take away some of the worry and stress that can overshadow times like these so that you can mourn your loved one with appropriate dignity and respect. This has been, and still is, the George Scott tradition - of offering a truly caring and professional service. The care and service we provide today...

A meaningful funeral doesn't have to be grand. It is about being true to the person you are remembering. πŸ’™

That might mean playing their favourite music, picking a specific colour theme, sharing a few heartfelt words from family, or simply taking a quiet moment of reflection together. We are here to help you include the little details that matter most, while keeping everything respectful and well organised behind the scenes.

If you are not sure what is possible, we can suggest thoughtful ideas based on what you share with us about their life and personality.

Tell us a little about your loved one, and our caring team will help you shape a fitting farewell.

Funerals are evolving and your loved one’s send off can be as unique as they were. πŸ’™

More families are choosing to personalise a service in ways that feel modern, meaningful, and true to the person they are remembering.

That might be a carefully chosen music playlist, a video tribute with photos and messages, or themed colours and decorations that reflect their personality, hobbies, or favourite places.

Some families also consider alternative venues, such as a garden, a beach, or a community space, alongside more traditional settings. There are also a wide range of coffin and casket options, including more distinctive styles and finishes.

At George Scott, we welcome contemporary approaches and will guide you through what is possible, with care and attention to detail, so the farewell feels authentic and personal.
..Tell us your vision and we’ll make it happen. πŸ’›

🌍 Celebrating different faiths & cultures 🌍
Every faith, every culture, every family deserves respect and understanding.

At George Scott Funeral Services, we know that a meaningful farewell doesn't look the same for everyone. Traditions, rituals and ways of saying goodbye vary beautifully across communities, and honouring those differences is at the heart of what we do.

Specific religious rites, particular timings, symbolic customs, or simply a family's own personal way of marking a life - our experienced team is here to listen and to help bring those wishes to life with care and dignity.

We welcome conversations about your cultural or religious traditions so we can create a meaningful service, and helping you saying farewell your way.

Back to school can bring big feelings for any child, but when a child is grieving it can feel especially hard. New routines, busy classrooms, and questions from friends can make the return feel overwhelming, even if they seemed to be coping over the summer.

Here are a few gentle steps which may help.

πŸ₯° Talk through what they are worried about and remind them it is okay to feel upset at school.

πŸ₯° Let their teachers know what has happened, and agree a simple plan if they need time out or a quiet space.

πŸ₯° Keep support in place outside school too, whether that's a trusted adult, a family check in after the school day, or a small way to feel connected to the person they miss, like a photo or a note in their bag.

Children and young people process grief in various ways, but knowing they have your support makes all the difference. πŸ’™
