•⁠ ⁠⁠MHRA: New Drug Safety Update issued 21 July on Domperidone - now contraindicated in patients with confirmed or suspected phaeochromocytoma due to risk of severe hypertension. Review any patients currently prescribed domperidone for nausea or gastroparesis and check for this diagnosis before continuing.

•⁠ ⁠⁠Workforce: New GPhC standards for the initial education and training of Pharmacy Technicians were approved at the 16 July Council meeting. For PCN leads and practice managers, this signals a strengthening of the Pharmacy Technician role - worth factoring into your team development and recruitment planning now.

•⁠ ⁠⁠Supply: Three active Serious Shortage Protocols remain in place: Creon (pancreatin), Estradot patches and Ramipril 1.25mg capsules. New this week - a Class 4 defect notification on Xaggitin XL prolonged-release tablets (incorrect tablet counts) and Tuzulby prolonged-release chewable tablets (missing PIL safety information). Check dispensing stock for both.

•⁠ ⁠⁠Primary Care: NHS England has proposed that PCN and Shared Network Provider contracts should not operate in the same areas (Pulse PCN, 17 July). If your PCN is in an area where both exist, this could affect your contractual structure and service delivery model - worth monitoring closely as guidance develops.

•⁠ ⁠⁠Workforce: Total ARRS staff numbers have dropped for the second consecutive month - the first sustained fall since the scheme launched. For PCN Clinical Directors and practice managers building pharmacy capacity through ARRS, this is worth monitoring. Recruitment strategy may need to adapt if the trend continues.

•⁠ ⁠⁠Supply: Three active Serious Shortage Protocols remain in place: Creon, Estradot patches and Ramipril 1.25mg capsules. Active supply notifications also cover Propranolol MR and Co-codamol. If your pharmacy team hasn't reviewed prescribing alternatives with the wider clinical team, now is the time.

•⁠ ⁠⁠GPhC: With oral semaglutide (Wegovy tablets) now available from pharmacies, expect an increase in patient queries about weight management prescribing routes. Practices should ensure their clinical pharmacists are briefed on the approved pathway and prepared to field questions - particularly around the distinction between NHS and private prescribing.

•⁠ ⁠⁠MHRA: Two dispensing-relevant recalls issued this week. Class 2 recall on Phenoxymethylpenicillin 250mg/5ml oral solution (Bristol Laboratories, batch 7124002) due to labelling issues, and a Class 2 recall on ChloraPrep 1ml applicators (Becton Dickinson) due to a potential sterility breach. Check your dispensing stock now.
