📰 NEWS: A new project funded by Cancer Research UK will explore why half of patients with a silent blood condition called smouldering myeloma will go on to develop an incurable cancer.

There are around 6,500 new myeloma cases in the UK every year, that’s 18 every day, and is almost always preceded by earlier conditions, such as smouldering myeloma (SMM).

Although SMM itself does not generally cause symptoms, around half of patients will develop full myeloma within five years and people of African ancestry have double the risk of developing the disease.

📰 NEWS: Patients in the West Midlands are among the first to benefit from the introduction of a simple and accurate new test for bladder cancer.

The GALEAS Bladder test requires a urine sample and can be done at home. It means many patients will avoid the necessity of an invasive cystoscopy which has to be done in a hospital and can be uncomfortable.

GALEAS Bladder has been introduced by UHCW University Hospitals Coventry and Warwickshire (UHCW) NHS Trust and is now being adopted by other West Midlands Trusts.

📰 NEWS: A University of Dundee researcher has been awarded nearly £400,000 to develop a potential new treatment for one of the most aggressive forms of brain cancer.

Dr Sourav Banerjee (pictured) received the grant from The Brain Tumour Charity to develop a novel molecule designed to simultaneously block two major cancer-promoting pathways that drive the growth of glioblastoma.

📰 NEWS: Clatterbridge project will use cancer data to help improve care for patients

The Clatterbridge Cancer Centre is developing a new project that will bring together valuable information about cancer care, treatment and outcomes to support future research and help improve services for patients.

The project, supported by Civic Health Innovation Labs at the University of Liverpool, will use information that is already collected by the NHS about cancer diagnosis, treatment and patient outcomes. This will be held securely and used by approved researchers to better understand what works best for diverse groups of patients.

Scientists have found the first direct evidence of the powerful role our genetic makeup plays in influencing our risk of cancer, with inherited genes interacting with acquired genetic mutations to shape how tumours evolve.

The findings could explain why some people are more susceptible to cancer than others in the same environment and suggest that future cancer prevention and screening strategies may need to account more carefully for inherited genetics and population diversity.

A little‑known group of hard-to-find immune cells could help transform cancer treatment, scientists at the University of Manchester’s Cancer Research UK Manchester Institute, have found.

Their discovery, published in the world leading journal Immunity this month, centres on activated dendritic cells, a specialised population of immune cells that orchestrate the body’s attack on cancer.

📰 NEWS: Study urges better support for people with rare spinal cancer

A new study by the Oxford University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (OUH) Spinal Sarcoma Service has highlighted the serious emotional and practical challenges faced by people diagnosed with this disease.

The study, published in the open access journal Psycho-Oncology, suggests that people with this rare and complex cancer would benefit from earlier diagnosis, better information, more joined-up aftercare and easier access to psychological support.

The research, carried out in collaboration with the University of Bath, was supported by a £20,000 grant from the Bone Cancer Research Trust (BCRT).
