Your people are one of your organisation’s greatest strengths. But people can only carry so much without support.

Frontline teams can carry secondary trauma, distress, pressure, safeguarding concerns, and difficult conversations day after day.

And the body keeps score. Without space to reflect and process the impact of their work, pressure can build over time, often leading to burnout and long term sick leave.

Research from BHT sussex into regular supervision found it helped protect workers from burnout and compassion fatigue, with some staff saying they may have otherwise needed longer sickness absence or left their role.

Reflective spaces are not about fixing. They are about creating safe spaces for people to pause, process, reflect on their work.

What action is your workplace taking to ensure people feel like they belong?

In every organisation, behind the systems, targets, and strategies are people that we can connect with.

And those connections matter: if we’re surrounded by people who support us and lift us up, we thrive. If we’re isolated and disconnected, we’re much more likely to struggle and you’ll often see it reflected in staff wellbeing, engagement, and retention.

Workplace relationships don’t just happen.

They’re built through everyday actions, how we connect authentically, support, and show up for each other.

What action is your workplace taking to build thriving environments?
It's . Movement is great. Walk and talk meetings can be beneficial. But messaging about occasional nods to mental health don’t create long-term improvements within workplaces.

🙏🏿Initiatives alone can’t address root causes of struggles with mental health. Fair pay, access to opportunity, and feeling valued and accepted are all essential for our wellbeing.

Focusing on relationships, on workplace processes that feel human and approachable, and on well-supported and connected teams are building blocks for a workplace wellbeing culture where everyone can thrive.

🔍Did you know that people’s brains respond more positively to leaders who show compassion. Having a compassionate culture has been linked with lower employee emotional exhaustion, a key component of burnout, as well as lower absenteeism from work.

The creation of safe, stable, and meaningful relationships is a mental health intervention.

There is growing evidence that our mental health is fundamentally shaped by the circumstances in which people are born, live, work, and play.

What do we mean by reflective spaces? In emotionally demanding roles, people carry more than just workloads. They carry difficult conversations, supporting people in crisis, the unpredictability of the work and the emotional impact of it all.

Reflective spaces give teams the opportunity to pause, process and talk openly about the realities of their work in a safe and supportive environment.

As Phil shares in this clip, they’re an important part of helping people sustain themselves in emotionally demanding work.

Without opportunities to reflect and feel supported, stress can build into overwhelm, burnout and people leaving the sector altogether.

What space does your team have to pause and process what they’re carrying?

Our lead counsellors will gently explore some of the common myths and misconceptions around counselling, and offer a more honest, human perspective on how it can support us at different points in life.

Rather than something we only turn to when things feel overwhelming or “too much,” counselling can be a space for reflection, understanding and growth , helping you make sense of your experiences and feel more connected to yourself.

During the session, we’ll cover:

📌What counselling is (and isn’t), and what it can actually feel like
📌How counselling can support you through different life experiences, not just in times of crisis
📌The different types of therapy available, and how to find what feels right for you
📌Why counselling can be a valuable part of ongoing self-care and wellbeing

Sometimes things can feel overwhelming or too much.
Life can get heavy. And when it does, it helps to have small ways to take care of yourself

🪣The stress bucket activity can be a helpful tool. Think of stress as a bucket that fills up with daily pressures. When it overflows, it’s time to let some out. Everyone is different but managing stress could look like:

That might look like:
-Talking to someone you trust
-Doing something you enjoy (even for 10 minutes)
-Getting outside or moving your body
-Taking a proper break and resting
-Saying no to something if you need to
