Can therapy help people understand themselves better?

You don't need a crisis to benefit from counselling. Our lead counsellor Katie explains:

"Many people do attend counselling to gain insight into their own thoughts, emotions, patterns and behaviours, to try and find those reasons behind them. There doesn't have to be a problem or something wrong, or something that needs fixing. It can be a place to go, share your thoughts, and find out a bit more about yourself and your behaviours."

What makes counselling different from talking to a friend?

It's one of the most common questions we hear. Our lead counsellor Katie shares her thoughts:

"Counsellors are trained professionals, so they can provide that structured, confidential and non-judgemental support. While you do have friends that are supportive and you can turn to, counsellors are trained to be objective and reflective. So they are non-biased to whatever you bring to that room."

How could counselling be helpful? Hear from our Lead Counsellor Liz the ways therapy can support people

Connection to self is about acceptance and love for who you are. Sometimes, having a safe space to talk things through can make all the difference.

Talking can sometimes help people to gain clarity about their thoughts, concerns and past experiences. Discussing how you are feeling, and why you’re feeling it, can lead to a better understanding of the things that add to and shape you.

If counselling feels like the right step, our team of experienced therapists are here to help.

Your people are one of your organisation’s greatest strengths. But people can only carry so much without support.

Frontline teams can carry secondary trauma, distress, pressure, safeguarding concerns, and difficult conversations day after day.

And the body keeps score. Without space to reflect and process the impact of their work, pressure can build over time, often leading to burnout and long term sick leave.

Research from BHT sussex into regular supervision found it helped protect workers from burnout and compassion fatigue, with some staff saying they may have otherwise needed longer sickness absence or left their role.

Reflective spaces are not about fixing. They are about creating safe spaces for people to pause, process, reflect on their work.

What action is your workplace taking to ensure people feel like they belong?

In every organisation, behind the systems, targets, and strategies are people that we can connect with.

And those connections matter: if we’re surrounded by people who support us and lift us up, we thrive. If we’re isolated and disconnected, we’re much more likely to struggle and you’ll often see it reflected in staff wellbeing, engagement, and retention.

Workplace relationships don’t just happen.

They’re built through everyday actions, how we connect authentically, support, and show up for each other.

What action is your workplace taking to build thriving environments?
It's . Movement is great. Walk and talk meetings can be beneficial. But messaging about occasional nods to mental health don’t create long-term improvements within workplaces.

🙏🏿Initiatives alone can’t address root causes of struggles with mental health. Fair pay, access to opportunity, and feeling valued and accepted are all essential for our wellbeing.

Focusing on relationships, on workplace processes that feel human and approachable, and on well-supported and connected teams are building blocks for a workplace wellbeing culture where everyone can thrive.

🔍Did you know that people’s brains respond more positively to leaders who show compassion. Having a compassionate culture has been linked with lower employee emotional exhaustion, a key component of burnout, as well as lower absenteeism from work.

The creation of safe, stable, and meaningful relationships is a mental health intervention.

There is growing evidence that our mental health is fundamentally shaped by the circumstances in which people are born, live, work, and play.
