💚 NEW EPISODE – THE ADHD SNUG! 🎙️

Ever wondered how much of what you're experiencing is ADHD, how much is hormones, and how much is simply being a woman who is expected to keep juggling EVERYTHING?

Episode 6 gets real about late ADHD diagnosis, perimenopause, mental health, emotional exhaustion and those disappearing tolerance levels!

We've spent years trying to keep all the plates spinning. But at what cost?

There's honesty, laughter, lived experience and another little trip down the Hyperfocus Hotline. 😂

AuDHD is not simply “a bit of ADHD and a bit of autism”.

When ADHD and autism occur together, characteristics can interact, overlap and sometimes seem to pull a child in completely different directions.

They may crave novelty and need predictability. Seek stimulation and become overwhelmed by it. Act quickly in one situation and need much longer to process in another.

Understanding that push and pull can help us make sense of what might otherwise look confusing or contradictory.

Not every characteristic will apply to every child, and this post is for awareness rather than diagnosis.

Misophonia is far more than simply finding a sound annoying.

For some children, particular everyday sounds can trigger an immediate and overwhelming emotional and physical response — even when the sound itself is quiet.

Chewing. Sniffing. Breathing. Tapping. Clicking. Repetitive noises.

To everyone else, they may seem insignificant. To the child experiencing misophonia, they can feel impossible to ignore.

You might see a child:
• covering their ears
• suddenly leaving the room
• becoming distressed, angry or panicked
• avoiding eating with other people
• struggling in classrooms or busy family environments
• being labelled as rude, dramatic or overreacting

But this is not simply a behavioural choice.

The reaction can be intense, involuntary and genuinely distressing.

Understanding the trigger — and the child’s response to it — can completely change the way we support them.

Misophonia can occur alongside autism, ADHD, anxiety and sensory processing differences, but it can also occur on its own.

The more we understand what sits behind the reaction, the less likely a child is to be judged for something they are struggling to control.

Save this post if it may help someone understand a child differently.

Some children become incredibly skilled at looking as though they are coping.

They follow the rules, watch their peers, rehearse what to say, suppress their discomfort and work incredibly hard to get through the school day.

Then they come home — and everything spills out.

For children who mask, particularly many autistic girls, what families see at home can look completely different from what school sees. That does not mean one environment has the “real” child and the other does not.

Sometimes the difference itself is important information.

Looking fine is not always the same as being fine.

Understanding the masking effect helps us look beyond what a child shows us and consider how much effort it may be taking to hold everything together.

Save this post for anyone supporting a child who seems to cope all day and falls apart once they are home.

I’ve been on an ADHD Conference the last 2 days and it has been amazing. I have taken so much from all the speakers. One thing I heard one of them say, and I can’t get it out of my head, is this; “an adult that has been diagnosed late, is a child that’s been failed by the system.” 😢
