The mental exhaustion of ARFID.
ARFID is far more than struggling to eat certain foods.
In fact it is way more than the actual food itself.
ARFID can be mentally exhausting.
Food often takes up a huge amount of time, emotional energy, and mental energy every single day.
For someone with ARFID, things that others barely think about such as choosing what to eat, shopping, attending social events, travelling, or eating at school or work often need planning with military precision!
The mental trauma of ARFID may include constantly thinking about whether "safe" foods will be available at venues, cafes, restaurants etc.
Worrying about other people's expectations, feeling extremely anxious before meals or any social occasions that involve food.
Explaining ARFID to people who don't understand it.(again!)
Coping with judgement, pressure, or unhelpful comments.
Feeling guilty, frustrated, or isolated because eating feels so difficult.
For parents and carers, the mental exhaustion can be just as overwhelming.
They may spend hours planning meals, sourcing safe foods, worrying about nutrition, attending appointments, advocating for support, and managing the emotional impact on the whole family.
This constant mental effort often goes unseen. While others only see what is or isn't on the plate, they don't see the relentless thoughts, anxiety, planning, and emotional energy happening behind the scenes.
ARFID isn't just physically exhausting, it can be mentally and emotionally draining every single day.
