Vets are brilliant at diagnosing and managing pain. That's their job. But physiotherapy isn't always top of mind, especially if your dog's already on medication and seeming stable.

Here's the thing: pain relief and strength-building are two different things.

Medication can manage the pain. But it doesn't rebuild the muscle or restore the mobility your dog lost. That's where physio comes in. It's not competing with your vet, it's working alongside them.

The best outcomes I see are when owners work with their vet and a physio at the same time. Pain relief first. Strength second.

When a senior dog starts taking longer to stand up, hesitates before the car boot, or pauses halfway through their favourite walk, it is very easy to write it off as an inevitable part of ageing.

But "slowing down" is rarely just age—it is almost always a sign of underlying stiffness, muscle loss, or joint discomfort that can be managed.

Just because our dogs are entering their golden years doesn't mean they have to live in discomfort. With early intervention and gentle, consistent clinical care, we can:

🔹 Rebuild lost muscle symmetry.
🔹 Manage joint inflammation using targeted, non-invasive therapies like Laser & TECAR.
🔹 Adapt their daily exercise routines so they stay active safely.

Our goal for senior dogs isn't to turn back the clock to when they were two—it's to protect their quality of life, maintain their independence, and keep those priceless moments alive (like greeting you at the door with a wagging tail).

If your golden oldie is showing subtle signs of slowing down, don't just accept it as "old age." Reach out to us today to see how a bespoke rehabilitation plan can bring comfort back to their daily routine! 🐾

Did you know that carrying just a few extra hundred grams can add kilograms of extra pressure to your dog’s joint cartilage? 🐶😳

When our dogs start slowing down or moving a bit stiffly, our minds naturally jump to joint supplements or new beds. But one of the most powerful—and overlooked—ways we can support their mobility is managing their body condition. It isn't just about the physical "extra load" on their legs, either.

Science shows us that excess fat tissue actually secretes inflammatory chemical signals into the bloodstream. This means extra weight actively promotes systemic inflammation, making arthritic or sore joints feel even more uncomfortable.

As pet parents, we give treats out of pure love and there is zero shame or judgment here. But if your dog is recovering from an injury (like a cruciate tear) or managing joint stiffness, keeping them at a lean, healthy weight is one of the kindest gifts you can give their body.

When paired with a tailored Strength & Conditioning programme and targeted modalities like Winback TECAR or Laser Therapy, reducing joint strain allows them to move with far more comfort and freedom.

If you have ever felt a knot of worry in your stomach when trying to remember how to do your dog's prescribed stretches or strength exercises at home, you are definitely not alone.

It is one of the most common worries pet owners share with us, and it comes from a place of pure love—you want to help them recover, not cause them extra discomfort.

After a physio session, trying to recall exact angles, repetitions, and posture cues from memory can feel daunting. That is precisely why we never expect you to rely on memory or hand-written notes!

To give you complete peace of mind, every patient receives a personalised home prescription through our specialised online exercise prescription software.

Here is how it protects your dog and supports you at home:

🎥 Video Demonstrations: Clear, step-by-step videos showing the exact exercise, technique, and tempo required.

📝 Custom Guidance: Explicit instructions on exact repetitions, sets, and rest times tailored specifically to your dog's current stage of recovery.

📱 Easy Digital Access: Access your dog's plan anytime from your phone, tablet, or laptop.

Home exercises are designed to be safe, gentle, and manageable. With guided digital support, you can feel 100% confident that you are helping your pet rebuild strength safely.

One of my handiest tools in the kit … electrotherapies!

The devices that always get me questioned when I dig them out, ‘what do they do’ and ‘how do they work’ ❔

Electrotherapies aren’t the lazy way to treat your dogs. They have huge benefits that human hands can’t achieve 🙌

Electrotherapies target your dog’s tissues at a cellular level to promote healing, repair, circulation, and improve overall recovery.

Each device is matched to your dog for their particular need and set to the appropriate level of treatment for safe practise.

Many of the dogs I’ve treated wouldn’t be where they are today without the help of electrotherapy devices ❤️

Ever wondered what a first physiotherapy session with Pet Performance Physio looks like? 🐾

No need to wonder, I can tell you exactly what is on the schedule at your first appointment!

1. Subjective History - collecting as much information from yourself about your dog and their condition.
2. Postural Analysis - a full static assessment to look at any postural adaptations that need addressing.
3. Gait Analysis - looking at your dog move through the paces to spot any abnormal or compensatory gait patterns. This also includes assessing your dog in every day functional movements.
4. Palpation and Joint Range of Motion - feeling your dog’s full musculoskeletal system to get a wider picture of how they feel.
5. Forming an appropriate Treatment plan - after conducting a problem list we begin to form practical steps on how to reach our rehabilitation goals.

One of the hardest parts of a spinal injury or IVDD recovery isn't always the rehabilitation itself—it's the uncertainty that comes with it.

Many owners find themselves analysing every step, worrying about every stumble, every knuckled paw, or questioning whether their dog is making enough progress. Those feelings are completely understandable, but it's important to remember that spinal recovery is rarely a straight line. There will often be good days, more challenging days, and times when progress appears to pause.

It's also worth celebrating the small milestones. Standing a little longer, placing a paw more accurately, improving balance, or taking a few extra controlled steps are all significant achievements. These small changes often build the foundation for bigger improvements over time.

Rehabilitation is about far more than simply performing exercises. Successful recovery combines appropriate rest, effective pain management, gradual progression, environmental adaptations, and an individualised rehabilitation programme that evolves as your dog gains strength and function.

Recovery takes patience, consistency, and support. Focus on the progress your own dog is making, no matter how small it may seem. Every step forward is worth recognising.

People often imagine that recovery is marked by dramatic milestones. The truth is, the most priceless moments are usually much quieter.

They look like the first time a paw is placed with purpose. A tail that wags a little higher. Standing for a few extra seconds without support. Taking one more confident step than yesterday. Choosing to move instead of hesitating.

In spinal and post-operative rehabilitation, progress is rarely linear. It is built through consistency, patience, and hundreds of small victories that gradually become life-changing outcomes.

These are the moments we celebrate because they represent healing, resilience, and the incredible determination of our canine patients. Every small gain matters, and every step forward is worth recognising.

Recovery isn't measured only by the destination. It's measured by the priceless moments along the way.
