Amber heat alert: a few tips to help you stay safe

Hot weather is on the way this weekend, and an amber heat alert is now in force. Here are some simple things that will help us all to stay safe in the sun:

๐Ÿ‘‰ Stay in the shade between 11am and 3pm where you can
๐Ÿ‘‰ Drink plenty of water throughout the day and go easy on alcohol and caffeine
๐Ÿ‘‰ Wear sunscreen, a hat and light, loose clothing if you are heading out
๐Ÿ‘‰ Close curtains and windows during the day, then open them again at night when it is cooler
๐Ÿ‘‰ Cool down with a shower, or splash cool water on your wrists and the back of your neck

Please take a moment to check on older neighbours, anyone living alone and people with health conditions. A quick knock on the door or a phone call really can make a difference.

Watch out for signs of heat exhaustion such as dizziness, headache, feeling sick or heavy sweating. Move the person somewhere cool, give them water to sip and call 999 if they do not improve.

Visit the NHS website for more information on staying safe in the sun. Link in the comments๐Ÿ‘‡

โ„น๏ธ You may be aware that there have been some cases of meningitis in Reading. If you are worried or feeling unwell, please call NHS 111 for advice.

Some of the symptoms of meningitis may include:
๐Ÿ”น High temperature
๐Ÿ”น Being sick
๐Ÿ”น Headache
๐Ÿ”น Rash that does not fade when a glass is rolled over it
๐Ÿ”น Drowsiness or unresponsiveness

Vaccinations offer some protection against certain causes of meningitis. Check to see if your vaccinations are up to date.

All patients should continue to attend appointments as normal.
