While training to be a therapist, students will face many uncomfortable experiences such as uncertainty, strong emotions, and self doubt. Fighting against these can make it difficult to stay present, respond in a flexible way and remain grounded in the therapeutic relationship.

That’s why our professional counselling diploma course makes use of Acceptance Commitment Therapy alongside Compassion Focused Therapy to enhance counselling work in a clinical setting.

Training to be a counsellor is demanding. It involves students turning inwards to reflect, evaluate and grow and this process can highlight feelings of fear and self-criticism.

Compassion Focused Therapy is a powerful way to help silence the inner critic. It can help trainee counsellors learn to relate to themselves with warmth, understanding and courage. That's why Compassion Focused Therapy is an integral part of our professional Diploma in Integrative Counselling and Psychological Therapy.

Find out more about the role of Compassion Focused Therapy in our latest training blog post at https://www.firstpsychologytraining.co.uk/blog-detail?ID=53

An important part of training to be a counsellor is role play. This may seem strange and artificial but it helps prepare students to meet real clients in the real world.

Some of the key benefits of role play are:

✅ It helps students understand processes and approaches in a practical way.
✅ It supports and helps build a capacity to listen in the specific way that counsellors need to listen.
✅ It helps students learn more about themselves and how they respond to what others say to them.
✅ It is an opportunity to receive feedback from peers and tutors.
