This , we’re shining a special light on our incredible inpatient volunteers at the Royal Edinburgh Hospital.

From running the library and delivering magazines, to caring for our gardens and supporting wellbeing initiatives, inpatient volunteers play a vital role in daily life across REH.

Volunteering side by side with the public volunteers not only enriches the hospital environment but also supports their own recovery journeys!

This Volunteers' Week we are also celebrating our Bridge Builder volunteers.

Bridge Builders is one of our newest programmes, launched this year, supporting people to attend and engage in their outpatient appointments. Our volunteers are at the heart of making this possible. Thank you for your compassion, commitment and the difference you make.

This year for Volunteers' Week we want to thank all our volunteers for the incredible work they do every single day! 🙌

We would also like to spot light just a few volunteer services that deserve a little extra recognition.

🚗👏 Huge thanks to Kosar Bibi, who’s been volunteering as a driver since Nov 2024, helping NHS Lothian patients get home safely after discharge. From local trips to journeys as far as Inverness, she’s already supported over 120 patients and clocked an amazing 21,000+ miles! 💙

We were proud to welcome First Minister John Swinney to the Haematology service at the Western General Hospital, where he saw first-hand how charitable funding has transformed the unit into a modern, patient-centred space. Staff shared how the refurbishment is enabling new ways of delivering care, including cutting-edge treatments like CAR-T therapy 🧬

We also welcomed newly appointed Cabinet Secretary for Health and Social Care, Angela Constance, to the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh for her first official visit. Touring the Command Centre, orthopaedics ward and Emergency Department, she heard directly from staff about how real-time data, innovative technology, and collaborative working are improving patient flow and outcomes.

From robotic-assisted surgery delivering millimetre precision to smarter use of data to manage demand, our teams are leading the way in transforming patient care👏
