Your voice matters – have your say on the future of social care

The future of social care affects all of us — but it’s particularly important that the voices of people who use social care, support loved ones, and work in social care are heard.

The Government is currently asking people to take part in The Big Conversation, sharing their experiences, views and ideas about what social care should look like in the future.

This is an opportunity to share what matters to you, what works well, what could be better, and what you would like to see for the future.

They organise and signpost to a whole host of activities happening locally. Coming up, for example:

📱 Tea, Tech and Talk sessions, starting on 17th September, are a chance to get more confident using smartphone apps in a friendly and supportive setting.

🚶 Or, if you fancy getting out and about, there are free guided History and Heritage walks as part of the week-long Exeter Walking Festival, giving you the chance to explore and learn more about the local area.

There’s lots more going on too, so give them a follow and see what you might like to get involved in.

Back to School Tip #2 - Creating Predictability in the Unknown

When there’s lots of uncertainty, knowing what’s coming next can help things feel a little more manageable.

❤️ DO use visual planners, reminders or simple conversations about what the day might look like. Knowing what to expect can help children and young people feel more organised and in control.

❌ TRY TO AVOID making planners or routines something they *have* to use. When a child is already feeling anxious or overwhelmed, even something designed to help can start to feel like another demand.

Instead, keep things flexible and involve them in deciding what might be useful.

A planner on the fridge, a quick chat the night before, pictures, a checklist, or no planner at all – different things work for different people.

The aim isn't to create the perfect routine. It's to make the unknown feel a little less unknown. ❤️💙

Back to school - Happy Bubbly or Dizzy Fizzy?!

The return to school can bring all sorts of feelings – excitement, nerves, worry, relief… and sometimes all of them at once! Our Calmer Lives team are here with some tips to help!

Calmer Lives Back to School Tip #1: Listen to the wobbles.

❤️ DO Validate your child’s wobbly feelings and bring comfort to them by being available to listen and reassure them that this is normal and understandable to feel these uncomfortable feelings.

❌ TRY TO AVOID jumping straight to “don't worry” or “you'll be fine”. We might say it with the best intentions, but sometimes children just need to know that we've heard and understood how they're feeling.

Sometimes being there and listening is more helpful than trying to make the worry disappear.

⭐ Community Champion Spotlight: Nathan Adams ⭐

We're sending a massive thank you to Nathan Adams, Programme Coordinator for Exeter Leisure at St Sidwell's Point.

What started as a short collaboration earlier in the year has now grown into a fantastic weekly activity that the people we support genuinely look forward to.

Nathan and his team have created a welcoming and inclusive space where everyone can enjoy being active at their own pace. They bring energy, enthusiasm and understanding to every session, helping to break down some of the barriers disabled people can face when accessing fitness and leisure facilities.

One of our regular attendees, Ollie, says his favourite thing about the sessions is being able to exercise alongside non-disabled gym users, something that perfectly reflects CEDA's vision of creating stronger, more inclusive communities.
