"Painting helped me live after my stroke"

Today is World Stroke Day and we wanted to reshare this video by BBC Loop, who visited Project Ability a few years ago to interview John and his wife. The video tells John's story about how his life changed after having a stroke in 2006, and how art gave him something to focus on and get up for each day.

Today is World Stroke Day. Every 5 minutes in the UK someone has a stroke. Stroke is a devastating brain injury, leaving behind life-changing trauma.

Mums, dads, grandparents, young people and even children can be left unable to move, see, speak or even swallow. It’s a life-changing event that robs survivors and their families of the life they knew.

This , we're sharing a lucky dip fundraiser supporting the work of John McNaught at Project Ability, who suffered a life changing stroke in 2006.

Wow! Thank you so much to everyone who has donated and entered our lucky dip so far! We’re currently sitting at £411.25, and we’d absolutely LOVE to get to our stretched goal of £500!

Can you help make it happen? We have TEN paintings to be won, so your odds of winning are very good!

John McNaught has kindly donated 10 of his beautiful bird paintings to Project Ability for this fundraiser. Each painting is a small oil on board, each with its own distinct colour palette and personality.

McNaught’s life changed in 2006, when he suffered a stroke which inhibited his speech and movement. John started attending Project Ability in 2010 and has been with us ever since! His artistic skill and confidence have grown over the years and John now has an impressive body of work showcasing his eclectic painting style.

This Thursday is World Stroke Awareness Day and we wanted to share and celebrate John’s determination, skill and beautiful art with the world!

🦜The John McNaught Fundraiser Lucky Dip is now open!

We’re celebrating the incredible creativity and determination of Aspire artist John McNaught, and giving you the chance to win one of 10 original John McNaught paintings.

John’s journey with art began following a life-changing stroke in 2006, which affected his speech and movement. While recovering in hospital, John attended an art class and amazingly learned to paint using his left hand, after being right-handed his whole life.

Since joining Project Ability in 2010, John’s passion for painting and confidence in his own artistic practice have gone from strength to strength.

His eclectic work spans landscapes, portraits and more, with his paintings exhibited nationally and internationally. And now you can win one by donating to our lucky dip 😍

🪶 10 paintings. 10 winners.

There’s a suggested donation of £25, but you can give whatever you’re able to. John’s smaller paintings usually retail between £45–£65, so this is a fantastic chance to win an original artwork while supporting Project Ability.

Join us this afternoon from 2–4pm at Project Ability, Trongate 103, as we celebrate three exhibitions as part of the Scottish Mental Health Arts Festival.

‘Raison d’Être’ by Coco – our Main Gallery, bringing together Coco’s bold and personal exploration of art, identity and mental health.

Stuart Low – 1st floor, Gallery II, where you can explore Stuart’s work and the ideas, experiences and interests behind his art.

‘Mind, Matter, Mhairi xox’ – in the Trongate 103 foyer, celebrating Mhairi, her creativity and the work she made during her time at Project Ability.

Come along, have a look around the exhibitions, meet artists and friends, and join us for an afternoon of art.

Stuart Low | Gallery II

Join us this Saturday for a special afternoon at Trongate 103 as we celebrate three exhibitions across the building as part of the Scottish Mental Health Arts Festival.

Upstairs at Project Ability in Gallery II, we’ll be celebrating Stuart Low’s exhibition, which brings together a selection of his work exploring his experiences, interests and perspectives through art.

Alongside Stuart’s exhibition, we’ll also be celebrating Coco’s ‘Raison d’être’ in our Main Gallery and ‘Mind, Matter, Mhairi xox’ in the Trongate 103 foyer.
