Should we still be icing injuries?

Ice can be useful for short-term pain relief, but we probably don’t need to reach for it automatically after every injury.

Inflammation is part of the body’s normal healing response, and there’s some evidence that excessive icing may interfere with that process.

That doesn’t mean swelling is always good or that ice should never be used — it’s about using it for the right reason.

👉 Use ice for pain if it helps. But don’t feel like you have to ice an injury just because it’s swollen.

Rest… too much or too little? 🤔

When you’re injured or in pain, completely stopping activity isn’t always the answer — but pushing through everything isn’t either.

The key is finding the right balance ⚖️

✅ Keep moving where you can
✅ Modify activities that aggravate symptoms
✅ Gradually build strength and tolerance
✅ Give your body enough time to recover

The right amount of load can be part of the treatment. 💪

If pain or injury is stopping you doing what you enjoy, get in touch for a physiotherapy assessment.

Do you train your calves? 🦵

Calf strength is often overlooked, but it plays an important role in walking, running, jumping and returning to sport.

The seated calf raise particularly targets the soleus — a muscle that has to tolerate a lot of load during running 🏃‍♂️

It can be a useful exercise when building strength for:
• Achilles and calf rehabilitation
• Running-related injuries
• Improving lower-limb strength
• Returning to sport

And no — calf raises aren’t just for getting bigger calves 😂

A little throwback that means a lot to me 💚

During Covid, I wasn’t able to continue with my usual self-employed physiotherapy work, and I came across a bank physiotherapist role at Overgate Hospice.

Overgate has always held a very special place in my heart. My mum passed away there in 2012, and as a family we’ve done a lot of fundraising for the hospice over the years.

When the opportunity came up to actually work there, it felt like another way I could give something back.

I worked at Overgate weekly for around 8 months. It was a very different role from the MSK physiotherapy I usually do, but one I genuinely loved. It was an incredibly rewarding experience and a very special place to work.

Recently, I had the opportunity to go back and see their new inpatient unit — and what they have created is incredible.

As a family, we spent several nights at the old hospice with my mum and made memories during an incredibly difficult time that we can still cherish today. Seeing the facilities families now have available, and knowing more people will be able to have those precious moments together, was really quite emotional.

The biggest compliment I can give Overgate is that when you walk through the doors, it simply doesn’t feel like a hospice.

An amazing place, filled with amazing people. 💚

And yes… I found my old name badge! 😂

💪 Exercise of the Week: Lateral Raise

The lateral raise is a great exercise for strengthening the side of your shoulders (lateral deltoids), helping improve shoulder strength and muscle development.

The key is to use a controlled movement rather than chasing heavy weights.

Do you include lateral raises in your shoulder workouts?

💊 What’s the best medication for acute lower back pain?

When your back suddenly “goes,” it can be hard to know which pain relief to choose.

According to UK clinical guidelines, oral NSAIDs are usually the first medication recommended for acute non-specific lower back pain, provided they’re safe for you to take.

👉 Swipe through to learn:
✅ Which medications are recommended.
✅ The difference between over-the-counter and prescription NSAIDs.
✅ Why medication is only one part of recovery.

Remember, pain relief may help manage symptoms, but keeping active and gradually returning to normal activities are just as important.

⚠️ This post is for general education only. Medication isn’t suitable for everyone. Always speak to your GP or pharmacist before taking pain relief, especially if you have stomach, kidney or heart conditions, are pregnant, or take other medicines.
