☆ A day of reflection… 🌸☆

Beyond the reflections on the pond outside our meeting room window, yesterday’s standardisation meeting gave us the chance to reflect professionally on assessment practice, discuss standards, compare approaches, and ensure as teachers we continue to provide fair, consistent outcomes for every learner. It’s such an important part of quality teaching practice and was a great day meeting up in person with colleagues from across the region with one of the organisations I teach for

With the heatwave and half term in full swing, here’s some info to keep little ones (and grown ups) hydrated and cool in the warm weather

Heat exhaustion can creep up quickly — especially during busy days out, parks, sports clubs and garden adventures. Watch out for:
☀️ Headaches
☀️ Dizziness
☀️ Feeling sick
☀️ Heavy sweating
☀️ Tiredness or irritability in children

☆ Bank holiday family time, we’ve got this! ☆

Splinters, bumps, cuts, burns, falls, stings, choking - these sort of things can happen when we least expect them.

Would you know what to do if:
• Someone choked at the BBQ?
• A bee stings you?
• A child fell and hit their head?

A brilliant CPR & AED awareness session in the heart of Harrogate last week, helping more people feel confident to act in an emergency.

☆ Safeguarding in practice ☆

Teaching delivered for another company last week. A really valuable safeguarding session delivered on site at a North Yorkshire nursery, working with a fab team that included apprentices, room leaders, practitioners, their cook and management.

Safeguarding touches every role within a setting, so bringing everyone together created space for shared understanding and open discussion.

We worked through key areas including being aware of possible signs of neglect and abuse, recognising concerns, responding appropriately, recording and reporting, promoting wellbeing, the voice of the child, supporting parents, and understanding how safeguarding fits into everyday practice. Alongside this, there were scenario discussions and activities to explore real-life situations and decision-making.

Delivering training face to face and on site allows everything to be tailored to the setting — linking directly to their routines, environment and team dynamics. It also gives people the chance to talk things through together, ask questions and build confidence as a whole team.

That shared approach has a real impact on the consistency and quality of care children receive day to day. A thoughtful, engaged group and a really worthwhile session. Shining STAR attitudes to keeping children safe and giving them the best start in life! ⭐

☆ April showers and first aid powers ☆

Whilst the weather outside was full of spring showers, we had 13 learners and a full and varied Paediatric First Aid course inside our Leeds classroom this weekend, delivered alongside another trainer and company.

A brilliant mix of childminders, SEN teaching assistants, SEN personal carers, secondary teachers, holiday club leaders, nursery professionals and apprentices — some completely new to children’s first aid, others refreshing and building on existing knowledge.

Together we worked through the key situations that can happen when caring for children. Learners studied CPR, choking, burns, bleeding, allergic reactions, seizures, fevers, head injuries and how to respond to sudden illness or accidents calmly and confidently.

The mix of backgrounds always makes for great learning, with thoughtful questions, shared experiences and lots of practical discussion around real-life situations from their different settings.
