The University of Exeter has launched the United Kingdom's first postgraduate degree dedicated entirely to Magic and Occult Sciences, welcoming its first cohort of students in September 2024. The program explores how occult traditions have influenced religion, science, medicine, culture, and society throughout history. Rather than promoting supernatural claims, the degree examines these subjects through an academic lens, drawing on history, archaeology, sociology, philosophy, and religious studies.

Students investigate topics including witchcraft, astrology, tarot, crystals, and folk magic while studying their historical and cultural significance across different civilizations. According to university researchers, growing public interest in esoteric traditions, particularly among younger generations, contributed to demand for a rigorous academic program. Course leader Professor Emily Selove stated that the degree was designed for serious scholarly exploration of these traditions and their impact on human history
