StarPhysio

StarPhysio Physiotherapy and aquatic therapy for babies, children and young people with complex, diverse and multiple neurological conditions.

Star Physio are a small team of physiotherapists (Steven Southwell, Jo Wilkes and Holly Garwell) with over 30 years’ experience, specialising in treating babies, children and adults with neurological and developmental disabilities. The story of Star Physio began when Steve and Jo met as college students, and went on to train together as physiotherapists at Brighton University. Even in their studen

t days, they had dreams of working together, and developed an interest in the therapeutic benefits of hydrotherapy, essentially physiotherapy conducted in a heated water pool where the heat and the buoyancy of the water creates a beneficial environment for the treatment of many conditions and needs. In 2013, alongside his NHS work, Steve started renting a small hydrotherapy pool to treat a handful of private clients. This proved very successful, and to meet demand he quickly enlisted help from Jo. They soon realised that the local Sussex community lacked a specialised hydrotherapy service that was affordable and accessible. Despite never advertising, Steve and Jo quickly built up a waiting list of potential clients, and realised they were not able to meet the demand for their hydrotherapy service. With an eye to expansion, Steve and Jo entered the 2016 Santander Universities Entrepreneurship Awards to test the viability of an enhanced service and to access business advice and support from the experts. After winning the award for “Most Enterprising Community Project” under the then name of ‘247Physio’, the shared vision for a hydrotherapy and physiotherapy practice gathered pace. Steve and Jo quickly embraced the interest of the third experienced physiotherapist, Holly, and committed to working together to develop an accessible assessment and therapy based service for neurologically disabled children and adults in their local community. This collaboration become ‘Star Physio’, a registered Social Enterprise with the core value of providing affordable aquatic and land physiotherapy for paediatric and adult clients.

🌊 One of our lovely clients recently enjoyed a session on the water with Access Beach in Brighton.

🏄‍♂️ Organised by the Brighton Surf Lifesaving Club, they specialise in programs and physical features that help people with disabilities or mobility issues enjoy the shingle beach and get safely into the sea.

They will help both adults and children and endeavour to make anything possible, with advanced notice so they can make arrangements.

They use the changing facilities at Sea Lanes, where there is a hoist and a Changing Places facility (although you need to take your own sling.)

💧The next session is on Saturday 8th August. See post for contact details...

We’re really pleased to be launching a new fortnightly paediatric physiotherapy clinic for children under 5 in Patcham, Brighton.

From Monday 6th July, we’ll be offering specialist sessions for babies and young children that are focused on supporting their movement, development, and confidence in a calm and welcoming space.

We take the time to follow your child’s lead, helping them feel comfortable, engaged, and supported at their own pace. We believe that early intervention can make a meaningful difference to a child’s development, and our holistic, hands-on approach is tailored to each child’s individual strengths and needs. Our therapists may also draw on Bobath (NDT) principles, a hands-on approach that supports movement, play, and participation in everyday activities.

Depending on your child’s needs, sessions may include a range of specialist equipment and approaches, such as:

• Functional Electrical Stimulation (FES)
• Whole Body Vibration (WBV) therapy
• Sensory-based strategies to support comfort and regulation
• Play-based activities tailored to your child’s individual interests

We often support families seeking early intervention or who have concerns about:

– Delays in motor development
– Neurological or genetic conditions
– Musculoskeletal concerns
– Sensory or early developmental needs

🕙 Hourly appointments available between 10:00am – 1:00pm
📍 Patcham, Brighton
