Have you ever been lying on a treatment couch and felt your body gently wanting to move on its own?
Perhaps your head slowly turned, your arm lifted, or your body wanted to stretch or twist without you consciously deciding to do it.
This is often referred to as myofascial unwinding.
It can be a surprising experience if you've never felt it before, but it's not something you have to make happen. It isn't a technique that can or should be forced. If it occurs, it happens naturally while your body is relaxed and supported.
Not everyone experiences unwinding, and that's completely normal. Every person's nervous system responds differently, and every treatment is unique.
Although we don't yet fully understand why unwinding occurs, many clinicians believe it reflects changes in the nervous system that allow long-held patterns of tension and movement to soften.
Whether your treatment is completely still or includes spontaneous movement, that aim is still the same: to help your body feel safer, freer and more at ease.
