We couldn’t resist sharing a little glimpse of our beautiful summer flowers here at Dillamore Funeral Service, with thanks to Martin, who has been with us for over 30 years. He is not only our coffin maker, Funeral Director and general handy man, he has an eye for detail when it comes to our floral displays too.

Our historic building in Leighton Buzzard is looking particularly lovely at this time of year, with the colourful blooms brightening up Old Road and bringing a little extra colour to our corner of the town.

As a long-standing, independent family-run funeral service, we’re incredibly proud to be part of the Leighton Buzzard community and to have called our premises home for over 100 years.

This is something we wholeheartedly agree with.

At Dillamore Funeral Services, we know all of our guests by name. We get to know their families, their stories and the things that made them who they were.

We are proud to have a small mortuary where every guest entrusted into our care is looked after personally. They are washed and dressed in our own premises, cared for by our own team and remain with us until their final journey.

For us, there is something incredibly special about caring for people in the community they called home.

The people who grew up here, raised their families here, worked here and made their lives here are cared for here, surrounded by the people and community they knew. In a small way, we feel that we are able to care for them at home.

We may only have a small mortuary, but that is exactly what makes our care so personal. Our guests are not simply a number or one of many. We know who they are, we know their families and we take pride in caring for every individual with dignity, respect and compassion.

As an independent, family-run funeral business, we are incredibly proud to serve our local community. We are proud that the people of our town can remain within their community and be cared for by people who live and work here.

This is Lisa in our mortuary. Currently in our Todmorden location we have space for four guests. Each person is washed and dressed in their own clothes. We know them by their first name and what their family loved about them.
Last week I read about a planning application for a 700 person mortuary in York! Made by a well known direct cremation company. You'll have seen their ads on TV. With this company you do not have the option of visiting your loved one or of having a funeral ceremony.
This is a gentle reminder that small independent funeral companies, staffed by people in your community, can arrange a direct cremation. And you're likely to still have the option of visiting your loved one or even having an attended ceremony before the cremation. A powerful reflection on your loved one's life with the support of your community.

Can ashes be carried on a plane?

It’s a question we’re often asked, and the answer is yes—you can travel with cremated remains, but there are a few important things to keep in mind.

Most airlines and airport authorities allow ashes to be carried either in hand luggage or checked baggage.

However, to ensure a smooth journey:
• Use a secure, non-metallic container (for airport screening)
• Carry the official cremation certificate/documentation
• Check your airline’s specific requirements before you travel
• If travelling internationally, be aware that rules can vary between countries

Planning ahead can help avoid unnecessary stress at what is already an emotional time.

Several people have asked what we mean when we say we use a proper coffin for a direct cremation.

Quite simply, we use the same oak veneer coffin that we would use for an attended funeral, complete with a name plate, fixtures and fittings, while also still being prepared with the same care and attention.

For us, the level of care we provide shouldn't depend on whether a family chooses an attended service or an unattended cremation.

Every person entrusted to us is treated with respect and consideration from the moment they come into our care until their final journey.

That's why we believe the standard should never be lowered simply because a family has chosen a direct cremation.
