June is International Cancer Survivors Month, a time to look past the clinical data and share the real, human moments behind the treatment. Today, we are sharing the incredible journey of Hilary, a retired pharmacist from High Wycombe.
Throughout her career as a pharmacist, Hilary saw too many people leave things until it was too late. Because of this, she and her husband took a proactive approach to their health, undergoing private scans every five years. In late 2023, that decision changed her life. A routine MRI revealed a brain tumour located deep in the centre of her brain. “I had no symptoms... I felt completely fine,” Hilary recalls.
Because of its sensitive location, surgery wasn’t an option. Hilary was referred to Dr. Michael Kosmin at Proton International London for Proton Beam Therapy—an advanced treatment that uses protons instead of X-rays to target tumours with exceptional precision, sparing healthy surrounding tissue.
We know that navigating an unexpected diagnosis brings immediate anxiety, especially when it comes to dealing with the background logistics and health insurance. To help close that anxiety gap, our team provides full administrative support. As Hilary notes: “The best part was that I didn’t have to chase my insurer. Proton International London spoke to Bupa directly. That made a huge difference.”
Today, Hilary is back to enjoying her retirement, from Mediterranean cruises to touring India’s Golden Triangle.
