Teamwork is at the heart of every day in intensive care. 💙

At Bristol Royal Infirmary ICU, the team comes together every morning for a multidisciplinary safety brief - highlighting risks, planning for complex patients, making sure the right skills are in place, and preparing for admissions and discharges.

It’s an essential part of the ICU day, and just one example of the teamwork, communication and careful planning happening behind the scenes of intensive care.

This Intensive Care Week, we see the people behind that care.

Intensive Care Week starts today! 💙

This week, we’re recognising and celebrating the people behind intensive care. The teams bringing expertise, compassion and innovation to patients and families every day.

ICU. I See You.

And we're starting with the critical care teams at Heartlands Hospital and Good Hope Hospital, who are showing that improving intensive care can also mean thinking differently about how care is delivered.

🌱 Critical care teams lead the way in greener care

Critical care teams at Heartlands Hospital and Good Hope Hospital are leading the way with a series of practical sustainability initiatives designed to reduce waste, save money and improve quality of care.

The work is being driven by a dedicated sustainability working group, which introduced a pilot ‘green bed space’ in each unit to test new ideas.

Following positive feedback, successful initiatives have now been rolled out to all bed spaces, showing how small changes can make a big difference for patients, colleagues and the environment.

The team has reduced unnecessary disposable glove use where it is not clinically required, reduced plastic waste in the delivery of medication and avoided unnecessary blood tests.

The group continues to explore new ideas and embed further quality improvements, with colleagues of all grades encouraged to get involved.

This Intensive Care Week, we see the people making changes like these happen.

With the introduction of the Health Bill (NHS Modernisation Bill 2026), The Intensive Care Society submitted evidence to Parliament alongside Royal Colleges, professional bodies, healthcare charities and patient organisations.

On behalf of our members and the wider intensive care community, we were keen to ensure critical care expertise is reflected in the legislation.

We will continue to work with policymakers, NHS leaders and partner organisations to influence policy, improve standards and champion the needs of critically ill patients, their families and the professionals who care for them - ensuring they stay at the heart of decision-making.
