When the invite came through we knew we were going to taste some special but we didn't expect this.

Diageo presented an elegant and expansive collection of aged whisky from some of their most noted distillers, some from truly ghost distilleries, others that represent the house style in a fashion which may not be familiar to a lot of drinkers.

We were assured each collection will be available "when it's ready" so don't look for these to be yearly or regular additions. The whisky has been maturing for so many years, we think it deserves to be savoured and are all in favour of this approach to releases. More of this please!!

Our drams were paired with some downright ridiculous canapés that either highlighted the produce local to the distillery or a flavour profile within the liquid itself. Clay baked leeks with haggis and almond financiers maybe our new favourite things to consume with whisky.

The first releases represent everywhere from the southern highlands to Islay with various stops in between. Clynelish, Blair Athol, Glen Ury, Talisker and Caol ila.

Jimmy fell for Glen Ury while Ortis fell in love with the balanced sweet smoke of the Talisker. Nigel however sang the waxy, spiced praises of the Blair Athol.

Thank you to the team for the invite.

The real reason for our trip up to Edinburgh was to try some of this year's Feis isle bottlings ahead of release.
Two highlight the power of maturity and the differences it can make while the third really is a testament to trying new things.

Let's start with the bottlings, two very different apples of the same tree.
At the heart of the releases is the ode to Two moons - flower moon and blue moon.
explained the significance which is heavily reflected in the packaging with Easter eggs abound. The 14yr is represented by the flower moon and it's youthful freshness, while the rarer 31 Yr mirrors the just as scarce Blue moon.

The 14 Yr is in a refill cask and finished 5 yrs in Oloroso Sherry casks. It's fruity, lots of white grapes, peaches with a subtle smoke.
It's elder sibling, the 31yr old is a different prospect entirely. 10yrs in Oloroso and heavily charred for complexity, bringing a savoury and antique note to the party. Leather and a tartin like sweetness made the whole group very happy.

The Caol ila offering was a big departure from the usual house style thanks in large part to the 2yr extra ageing in Don Julio tequila cask. This gave it a bright, citrus and herbaceous twist with a soft smoke and hints of sugar cane. The grassy nature really did bring something new to the table.

We'll take 3 bottles of the 31, thanks 😊

Let there be excitement!

Australian Whisky house have teamed up with smokey Scotch legends for a LIMITED EDITION bottling.

Expected this very limited release to disappear real quick, for most of us this post will be the only time we see it. 😂

Starward signature whisky is matured in Australian red wine casks in the tropical heat, producing what can only be described as a tropical whisky. This time around it is finished in ex-Lagavulin casks that introduce a coastal not to the rich whisky, and a charring from old oak. All of which sounds extremely inviting.

When you get hold of your bottle, make sure to stir down a nice old fashioned to truly enjoy it in the way ut was intended.

The Single Estate range draws inspiration from the Seasonals collection, however they are also a range of distinctive whiskies in their own right.

All build on the past bottlings but are now the backbone of the new core range. All bottled at 46% ABV, natural colour, and non-chill filtered.

Orchard and Oak is inspired by the Sowing Edition, Dark Briar is inspired by the Fallow Edition and Smoke Without Fire is inspired by the Ploughing Edition.

Orchard and Oak is the stand out of a great bunch, it's mix of oaks and the hint of extra apples from the Calvados cask make it an unusual but delicious dram.
