Your ear health matters – make it a priority!
Lauren, our Hearing Care Assistant, wanted to share a recent experience that highlights just how important it is not to ignore ear health concerns.
While this story isn't about a person, it serves as a valuable reminder of what can happen when an ear problem goes unnoticed.
Yesterday, Lauren's 12-year-old Labrador, Nyah, suddenly became unable to walk properly and appeared very disoriented. Naturally, this was a frightening experience for the family. Nyah was taken straight to the vet, who carried out a thorough examination and discovered a severe infection in her right ear. The infection had affected her balance, resulting in vertigo.
Nyah is now back home, resting comfortably and receiving medication while her family waits for the vertigo to improve. 🐾
Vertigo can be extremely distressing to experience, and some common symptoms include:
✅ Dizziness or feeling lightheaded
✅ Nausea and vomiting
✅ Balance problems or difficulty walking
✅ Rapid eye movements, difficulty focusing, or double vision
✅ Hearing loss or muffled hearing
✅ Tinnitus (ringing in the ears)
As Lauren points out, animals can't tell us when something is wrong or when they're in pain. As humans, however, we can recognise when something doesn't feel quite right and seek help when needed.
If you have any concerns about your ears, hearing, or balance, don't ignore the signs. Seeking advice from a healthcare professional early can help identify and address potential issues before they become more serious.
Everyone at the practice wishes Nyah a speedy recovery, and we hope her story serves as a gentle reminder to look after your ear health. 👂
