Is your baby feeding frequently? This doesn’t necessarily mean they’re not getting enough milk.

Abbie Southern, Lead Infant Feeding Midwife, works with new parents to support feeding. One of the most common concerns she hears is about how often a baby is feeding – but frequent feeding can be a completely normal part of your baby’s development.

She explains, “In the early days and weeks, babies often feed regularly for nourishment, growth, comfort and connection. Every baby is different and feeding frequently on its own is not a sign of a low milk supply.”

Our Infant Feeing team offers feeding assessments, providing you with the information you need along your feeding journey.

If you have questions about feeding, our experienced team of midwives are here to support you – ensuring you feel confident and informed every step of the way. 💜

For Nick, an active dad of two, sport has always been a big part of life. But what started as back and leg pain became something much more serious, affecting his ability to exercise, spend time with his family, and enjoy the things he loved most.

"My recovery time began to take longer, effective treatments became harder to find, and my symptoms got worse," says Nick. "It was beginning to severely limit my activities. I was missing out on things with my boys, couldn’t do my regular exercise, and it was affecting my wider health."

With his pain having such an impact on his life, Nick saw an orthopaedic surgeon to get to the root of the problem. An MRI and CT scan showed that his L5-S1 disc, the lowest cushion in the spine, was fused, and his L4-5 vertebrae had slipped, compressing a nerve root in his spine.

The surgeon presented Nick with multiple treatment options, including physiotherapy, injections and surgery. While physiotherapy and injections could have delayed Nick’s need for surgery, they didn’t offer a permanent solution.

With reservations about back surgery, Nick sought advice and was recommended getting second opinion from Professor David Choi, a neurosurgeon at The Wellington Hospital. After getting a referral, Nick discussed his treatment options with Professor Choi, who clearly laid out the benefits of surgery.

“It was clear very quickly that he excels as a neurosurgeon, and I knew I’d found the leading expert I needed!”

Nick arranged his surgery at The Wellington Hospital for eight weeks after his initial appointment, letting him fit it around his busy schedule.

“When I came round after the surgery, all the pain had gone,” Nick recalls. “The surgery has been completely life-changing. The severity of my pain was only truly clear when it was gone.

“The treatment and support I received during treatment, recovery in hospital and discharge have been outstanding.

“The kindness and care provided by the nurses and physios who, quite literally, got me back on my feet afterwards is something that will stay with me long after I am fully recovered.”

This World Heart Day, we're celebrating the patients who have trusted us with theirs.

From life-changing diagnoses to life-saving treatment, we're privileged to be part of so many journeys and inspired every day by the resilience and courage of the people we care for.

It's why sharing patient stories matters. They remind us that behind every procedure, scan and consultation is a person, a family and a future.

We're proud that more patients choose us for their cardiac care than any other independent provider, a reflection of the trust placed in our expert consultants, specialist teams and personalised approach to care.

Because every heartbeat matters. ❤️

PCOS has a new name.

🎥 Watch Consultant Obstetrician and Gynaecologist Dr Nickkho-Amiry as she explains why polycystic o***y syndrome (PCOS) is now known as polycystic morphology endocrine and metabolic syndrome (PMOS).

The new name reflects a growing understanding that this condition is about much more than the ovaries alone. It can affect many aspects of health, including hormones, metabolism, periods, ovulation, skin health, and fertility.

Everyone's experience is different. Some people may experience irregular periods, acne, excess hair growth, or challenges with fertility, while others may be affected in different ways.

Understanding the broader nature of PMOS can help people feel more informed, supported, and empowered to seek the care that's right for them. 💙

This Thyroid Cancer Awareness Month, we sat down with Professor Francis Vaz, Consultant Ear, Nose and Throat (ENT) Surgeon at The Harley Street Clinic, to discuss the symptoms to look out for, how thyroid cancer is diagnosed, and the treatment options available.

Thyroid cancer is the 20th most common cancer in the UK, accounting for just 1% of all new cancer cases. However, it is becoming more common. According to Cancer Research UK, rates of thyroid cancer have risen by 62% over the last decade and are projected to rise by a further 27% by 2038–2040.

That's why it's important to know the signs and symptoms to look out for. Treatment for thyroid cancer is usually most effective when it's found at an early stage, so getting any changes checked without delay can make a real difference.

🎥 Watch as Professor Vaz shares his expert insights.

Every day in the laboratory is different and at Lister Fertility Clinic at The Portland Hospital we continue to be amazed how incredible those first days of life can be. 🧬

Our time-lapse incubators allow us to observe embryo development in exceptional detail.

This embryo was fertilised through IVF and placed into continuous monitoring, where we noticed a small opening in its outer shell. As the video shows, part of the embryo gently emerges through this opening, and development continues in two sections.

Over time, this results in two fully formed blastocysts - day 5 embryos. This is a rare example of how very early identical twinning can occur, and something our team had never witnessed before. ✨

In the UK, we’re fortunate to have one of the most robust fertility treatment regulatory frameworks in the world, but these regulations only apply if you choose a licensed fertility clinic. 🧬

What does ‘regulated’ actually mean, and how can choosing a regulated fertility clinic make all the difference?

Is your child having difficulties with eating or drinking? Our expert team is here to help. 💙

At The Portland Hospital, home to leading paediatric specialists, we work closely with families to understand feeding and swallowing challenges and create personalised care plans tailored to each child's needs.

Rebecca Wright, Lead Speech and Language Therapist, explains:

"One of the methods my team uses to identify factors that might be making swallowing difficult is an assessment called a videofluoroscopic swallow study (VFSS). This tool allows us to see how food and drink moves from the mouth to the stomach. It is a safe, non-invasive assessment that uses a low-dose X-ray."

A VFSS may be recommended if your child:

✓ Sometimes coughs or chokes when eating or drinking.
✓ Experiences recurrent chest infections that may be linked to swallowing difficulties.
✓ Has a medical condition that could affect swallowing or feeding.

The assessment helps our specialist multidisciplinary team better understand your child's needs so we can provide clarity, reassurance and a personalised treatment plan.

We provide quick access to expert paediatric care and accept both NHS and GP referrals.

If you have concerns about your child's feeding or swallowing, come and see us. We're here to help identify what's going on and support your family every step of the way.
