Based in Dartmouth Park, on the south east corner of Hampstead Heath in north London, we have a team of fully qualified, registered and insured male and female osteopaths and sports massage therapists. Established in 2006 by Gavin Burt, the Backs & Beyond Osteopathic Clinic is a centre for the treatment of conditions such as low back pain, neck pain, sciatica, whiplash associated disorders, sports

injuries, headaches and pain from arthritic changes. As well as our General Osteopathic Clinic, we run four other special interest clinics - a Running Injury Clinic, Knee pain clinic, Headache Clinic, and a Mother & Baby Clinic. Our specialist running clinic treats hundreds of runners each year from beginners to international athletes. With over 500 patient consultations each month at Backs & Beyond, thousands of patients have benefited from our treatment plans. We provide solid diagnosis and care to help you improve as quickly as possible. The majority of our new patients come to us by recommendation from existing patients that we have helped or are referred by their GP or health care providers. We are recognised by all the major insurance companies, including BUPA and AXA PPP.

Strength of the leg muscles is crucial to injury prevention, particularly over long distances. Today we will look at an exercise to strengthen the all important hamstring muscle.

These muscles provide dynamic stability and power through the legs, and help protect from pain and injury.

If you are wondering what to expect when you come for an appointment with us, then let’s walk you through the steps.

As osteopaths, we help to restore normal muscle and joint function, relieve pain and help you on your road to recovery. We do this through a combination of movement, stretching, deep tissue massage, and muscle and joint manipulation.

To begin with, we’ll talk to you about your health and life, including your medical history, diet and exercise habits. We may also, carry out a few medical checks, such as checking your pulse, blood pressure and reflexes.

We usually look at your posture and how you move your body. We may also assess which areas are sensitive or tight, and what happens when we move them for you. We recommend that you wear loose clothing for your appointment, as tight clothing can limit our ability to assess you.

Finally, we’ll look at your personal situation and recommend a treatment plan that gives you the best possible results.

Sometimes, we may feel that osteopathy isn’t the right solution. If that’s the case, we’ll let you know and refer you to your GP or another specialist, such as an orthopaedic surgeon.

As well as standing on its own as a therapy, we believe massage can be the perfect complementary therapy to osteopathy.

For example, when used regularly for people with complex and long-standing musculoskeletal conditions.

The two main types of massage that we offer are Sports Massage and Remedial Massage. But how do you know which one to choose?

Sports massage is for the treatment and prevention of sporting injuries. It’s designed to alleviate the stress and tension that builds up in the body’s soft tissue during physical activity. It can also help prevent those niggling injuries that can get in the way of performance and achievement. You’ll struggle to find a serious athlete who doesn’t have regular sports massages.

Remedial massage is designed to tackle areas that are sore, stressed, tense and painful. It’s also good for relief from the mental and physical stresses and strains of modern life, and can help you sleep at night while giving you more energy during the day.

If you have any questions about this or would like to book an appointment, please give us a call at the clinic.

Shockwave therapy is widely used in osteopathy, physiotherapy, sports medicine and orthopaedics to provide fast pain relief and increased mobility.

It’s recognised by the top orthopaedic hospitals and used by high-profile professional sports bodies as a safe and effective alternative to the use of steroid injections for tendon injuries.

We use shockwave therapy to treat conditions such as:

▪️Rotator cuff injuries of the shoulder, including calcific tendinopathy
▪️Tennis and golfer’s elbow
▪️Knee pain (such as patellar tendinopathy)
▪️Achilles tendinopathy
▪️Plantar Fasciitis
▪️High Hamstring Tendonitis
▪️Hip Pain (Greater trochanteric pain syndrome).

🦵 Tight or sore on the outside of your lower leg? Your peroneal muscles might be the culprit.

The peroneals run along the outer side of your calf and play a crucial role in ankle stability, balance, and pushing off when you walk or run, yet they're often overlooked.

In this video, we talk you through a simple self-massage technique to release tension in the peroneal muscles, helping to:

✅ Ease lateral ankle and lower leg tightness
✅ Support recovery after activity
✅ Improve mobility and foot mechanics

Whether you're an athlete, on your feet all day, or dealing with recurring ankle issues — this one's worth adding to your routine.
