Grief is personal, support should be, too.

In this short film from SAIF’s Handled with Care campaign, Ed reflects on the difference between speaking to Pure Cremation’s call centre, and speaking to someone who genuinely understands what your family is going through.

“When you speak to a funeral director directly, they can understand your grief.”

For many families, personal connection, compassion, and continuity of care can make all the difference after losing someone they love.

Because funeral care should never feel transactional.

“For our family, this has been devastating.”

In this powerful short from SAIF’s Handled with Care campaign, Ed speaks openly about the emotional impact of losing his mum without the chance to arrange a proper farewell.

No support, no personal guidance – no relationship with someone helping the family through their grief.

For many people, a funeral director becomes far more than someone organising a service – they become a reassuring presence during one of life’s most difficult moments.

“I wish I could have explained to my mum that she could have had a funeral at roughly the same cost, but with a bit more family involvement”

Watch his story below.

“We didn’t quite understand what Mum had arranged.”

In this moving short from SAIF’s Handled with Care campaign, Ed reflects on the shock his family experienced after realising what his mother’s unattended direct cremation plan actually involved.

No funeral service, no final goodbye – just the ashes delivered home afterwards.

Like many people, Ed’s mum believed she was making things easier for her loved ones. But the emotional impact left behind was something the family had never fully considered.

Sometimes, the decisions made with the best intentions can still leave bereaved families lacking closure.

Music can play a powerful role in a funeral, helping families reflect, remember and celebrate the life of someone they love.

Over the years we’ve heard everything from classical pieces to modern favourites, the most important thing is choosing music that feels personal and holds special meaning.

Our latest blog lists some of the most popular music choices, but we’d love to hear from you – what song would you choose to remember someone special, or what song would you choose for yourself?

Share your thoughts in the comments, and read the full article here:

Music has the remarkable power to evoke memory, soothe sorrow, and honour a life in ways that words alone sometimes cannot – the right song can help friends and family express love, loss and gratitude in a uniquely personal way.

Ed spent more than 30 years serving in the British Army, including time as a Casualty Notification Officer – supporting families through some of the most devastating moments imaginable.

He understands grief, he understands loss, and he understands how important it is for people to have the chance to say goodbye.

But when his own mother, Rose, passed away after arranging an unattended direct cremation, Ed and his family were left shocked by how quickly everything happened.

“She was whisked away… and that was it.”

No final goodbye, no funeral – no opportunity for the family to come together and grieve.

In this deeply personal Handled with Care story, Ed reflects on the lasting emotional impact of losing his mum without the farewell he believes every family deserves.

Because sometimes, what people think will make things easier can leave loved ones carrying unresolved grief for years afterwards.
