Wilderness Festival: Doing Something New, While Still Doing What We Love 🌿🎶

Sometimes the best experiences come from stepping slightly outside your comfort zone.

That was the theme of our first ever Wilderness Festival.

We went along with friends, their families and the kids, not really knowing what to expect. Four days later, we left feeling like we'd only just started discovering what the festival had to offer.

And that was probably the best part.

Wilderness is huge. There’s music, food, talks, comedy, yoga, swimming, paddleboarding and countless unexpected moments waiting around every corner.

Of course, music was always going to be a highlight 🎶

From discovering new live acts at the Dive Bar to seeing incredible performances from artists like Carl Cox, The Last Dinner Party and Groove Armada, there was something happening everywhere you looked.

But what made Wilderness different was how easy it was to step away from the music and try something completely new.

A poetry reading. A book talk. Comedy. Conversations about health and wellbeing.

Things we might not have specifically gone looking for, but experiences we were so glad we discovered.

And naturally, there was plenty of wellbeing too 🧘‍♀️🏊‍♂️

Yoga, SUP yoga, open-water swimming and paddleboarding meant you could balance late nights and dancing with movement, fresh air and time outdoors.

That’s something we loved about the festival.

Wellbeing wasn’t about saying no. It was about adding more of the things that make life feel good.

Music.
Movement.
Nature.
New experiences.
Good food.
Laughter.
Time with people you enjoy.

It reminded us that wellbeing isn't always about routines or perfect habits.

Sometimes your Life Tonic is trying something new.

Sometimes it’s doing something you already love.

And sometimes it’s simply finding good people to share the experience with.

We definitely only scratched the surface of Wilderness… so perhaps there’s already a reason to go back.

What’s your Life Tonic for trying something new?

A Few Days in West Wales: Our Aberdyfi Life Tonic 🌊🏔️

Sometimes you don't need a big adventure or a faraway destination to press reset.

Sometimes you just need:
✨ Good friends
✨ Fresh air
✨ Time outside
✨ A little adventure
✨ A reason to slow down

For us, that meant a few days in Aberdyfi (Aberdovey) in West Wales.

With sunshine on our side, we made the most of everything the area had to offer—from friendly competition playing bowls at the recreation ground, to exploring the coastline, walking through beautiful countryside and discovering hidden waterfalls.

Naturally, we couldn't find a waterfall and natural pool without getting in 🥶

Cold water has become one of our favourite ways to reconnect with the body and practise being present. Standing in that water, focusing on breathing and embracing the challenge is a reminder that sometimes the things that feel uncomfortable are often the things that leave us feeling most alive.

But this trip wasn't just about activity.

It was about laughter with friends, good food overlooking a lake, exploring local history at Castell y Bere, beach walks, ice creams, crabbing from the jetty and simply enjoying time together.

It reminded us that wellbeing isn't always about structured exercise or perfect routines.

Sometimes your Life Tonic is:
🌿 Being outdoors
🚶 Moving your body
💙 Trying something new
🤝 Connecting with people you love
🥶 Doing something that challenges you
🍦 Enjoying the simple moments

That's what we love about wellbeing—it looks different for everyone.

For us, Aberdyfi was the perfect reminder that feeling good often comes from the simple things.

Good people. Good movement. Nature. Adventure. A little discomfort. And plenty of laughter.

When was the last time you had a really good catch-up with a friend? 💚

Have you ever noticed how spending time with people you care about can leave you feeling happier, calmer and more like yourself?

There's actually a reason for that.

Oxytocin, often called the "connection hormone", is released during positive social interactions. It plays an important role in helping us feel connected, supported and safe, while also helping to regulate our response to stress.

It's one of the reasons why simple moments can have such a positive impact on our wellbeing:
💚 Sharing a hug
💚 Laughing with friends
💚 Spending time with family
💚 Being kind to someone
💚 Walking and talking together
💚 Playing with your dog
💚 Joining a yoga class or community activity
💚 Sharing meaningful conversations

In today's busy world, it's easy to think wellbeing is all about exercise, nutrition or getting enough sleep.

Those things matter—but so does connection.

At My Life Tonic, we believe some of the best wellbeing habits aren't complicated. Sometimes they're as simple as making time for the people who make you smile.

Movement. Community. Kindness. Laughter. Time together.

These are all important ingredients for living well.

📖 Read our latest blog to discover the role oxytocin plays in supporting wellbeing and explore simple ways to encourage more connection in your everyday life.

And if you're looking for a welcoming community, we'd love to see you at one of our yoga classes, wellbeing sessions or events.

Because feeling better is often something we do together.

Thinking about trying cold water? 🥶

You don't need to be an experienced open-water swimmer.

You don't need an expensive ice bath.

And you definitely don't need to prove anything by staying in for as long as possible!

If you're curious about cold water dipping, how you start matters.

Here are 12 things we'd recommend thinking about:

1️⃣ Check it's suitable for you – if you have an underlying health condition, speak to your doctor first.

2️⃣ Start small – even 30–60 seconds in a cold shower is a great place to begin.

3️⃣ Use a wetsuit – there's nothing wrong with using one while you acclimatise.

4️⃣ Start in warmer months – gradually getting used to colder water can make the transition easier.

5️⃣ Control your breathing – take your time getting in and focus on steady breathing.

6️⃣ Don't go alone – cold water is better shared and you can look out for each other.

7️⃣ Make it social – the people you meet can become one of the best parts of the experience.

8️⃣ Know when to get out – longer isn't necessarily better. If you're getting very cold or stiff, it's time to leave the water.

9️⃣ Choose a managed location – particularly when you're starting out, look for somewhere with appropriate safety measures and lifeguards.

🔟 Take warm clothes – plenty of layers, socks, gloves and a hat!

1️⃣1️⃣ Have something warm afterwards – a hot drink can be very welcome.

1️⃣2️⃣ Give yourself time to recover – don't rush straight into the rest of your day.

And perhaps one of the unexpected benefits?

The people.

Cold water has a funny way of bringing together people who might never otherwise meet. You may even discover that some of your friends think you're slightly bonkers for voluntarily getting into freezing water! 😂

At My Life Tonic, we're big believers in starting small and building sustainable habits.

Cold water doesn't have to be extreme to become part of your wellbeing routine.

The Positive Effects of Sauna 🧖‍♀️🔥

For years, a sauna was something we only enjoyed on holiday or after a day skiing. Now, it's become a regular part of our weekly wellbeing routine—and we genuinely notice the difference.

While many people associate saunas with relaxation, regular sauna use may also support both physical and mental wellbeing.

People often enjoy saunas to help:
🔥 Relax tired muscles after exercise
🔥 Ease everyday aches and stiffness
🔥 Improve circulation
🔥 Reduce stress
🔥 Promote better sleep
🔥 Leave them feeling refreshed and re-energised

For us, the biggest benefit is simple: it's an opportunity to switch off.

For 15–20 minutes, there are no emails, no phones and no distractions—just time to slow down, breathe and unwind. That alone can make a huge difference in a busy week.

At My Life Tonic, we combine breathwork, yoga, cold water and sauna into one guided 60-minute experience.

The gentle yoga prepares your body, the breathwork helps calm the mind, and the contrast between cold water and the warmth of the sauna leaves many people feeling relaxed, refreshed and energised.

Some people join us for the yoga. Others come for the sauna or cold water. Whatever your reason, many discover that combining all three creates a powerful way to support overall wellbeing.

A Few Days in Stockbridge: A Little Wellbeing Escape 🌿💚

Sometimes you don't need to travel far to feel like you've properly escaped.

For a recent long weekend, Shannon and I headed to Stockbridge in Hampshire for a few days of exploring, walking, eating, relaxing and, naturally, fitting in some sauna and cold water.

We stayed at the beautiful Wild Escapes Tree House, overlooking Black Chalk Vineyard and tucked away amongst the trees. The perfect place to switch off.

We then found Tuhka Talo, where we enjoyed a wood-fired sauna and cold-water plunges in a lovely woodland setting. Heat, cold, fresh air and nature — our kind of combination!

We also visited the Army Flying Museum, explored Danebury Hill Fort while listening to an audio guide and enjoyed food beside the River Test at The Mayfly.

In between, we wandered around Stockbridge, explored independent shops, stopped for coffee and even attempted to watch the eclipse… with limited success! 😂

But perhaps the best thing about the weekend was that there was no real agenda.

It wasn't about following a perfect wellbeing routine or ticking off healthy habits.

It was simply about doing things that made us feel good:

🌿 Getting outside
🥾 Moving our bodies
🧖‍♀️ Sauna & cold water
📖 Learning something new
🍽️ Eating well
☕ Exploring
😂 Laughing
💚 Spending time together

That's what wellbeing means to us at My Life Tonic.

Sometimes you don't need to add more to your life. You just need to create a little space to enjoy the life you're already living.

Losing weight 100% isn't the point…

If you know My Life Tonic, you'll know we're not a weight-loss business.

We're much more interested in helping people find the things that support their overall wellbeing – moving more, sleeping better, managing stress, connecting with others and making small changes that can last.

But sometimes something happens that makes you stop and look at your own lifestyle.

For me, that happened recently when I was told I'm pre-diabetic.

I'm currently around 79kg and, if I'm honest, I don't think of myself as overweight. But I've been told that losing around 10kg could help reduce my risk of progressing towards Type 2 diabetes.

So I've set myself a challenge:

10kg in 8 weeks.

I've been reading Professor Roy Taylor's Life Without Diabetes and am using some of the principles as a reference point for my own experiment.

I'm keeping things deliberately simple:

🥦 Reducing refined carbohydrates
🍫 No crisps, chocolate or fizzy drinks – difficult for someone with a sweet tooth!
🍽️ No snacking between meals
⏰ Intermittent fasting – no breakfast and eating from around lunchtime
☕ Black coffee only
💧 Plenty of water
📝 Tracking what I eat each day

I'm also paying much more attention to how I eat – including vegetables and protein first and getting some movement in after meals.

I'm only a few days in, so I have absolutely no idea how this will play out.

I'm sure there'll be changes, challenges and modifications along the way.

And that's the point.

At My Life Tonic, we don't believe there's a single formula for wellbeing. What works for one person won't necessarily work for another.

This is my experiment.

I'll share the highs, the lows, the things that work… and the things that definitely don't!

Maybe I'll get to 70kg.

Maybe I won't.

But if I finish the eight weeks healthier, with better habits and a better understanding of what supports my wellbeing and overall health, then that's a pretty good Life Tonic.

Watch this space…I'll be writing regular blogs. (Promise there won't be many 'before/during/after' shots!

Slow down with Yin Yoga 🧘‍♀️✨

Life can be busy. Sometimes the most beneficial thing we can do is slow down.

Yin Yoga offers the opportunity to pause, breathe and give both your body and mind the space they need to recover.

Unlike more dynamic styles of yoga, Yin focuses on the deeper connective tissues, joints and fascia. By holding poses for longer, your body has time to gently:
✨ Improve mobility
✨ Increase flexibility
✨ Release built-up tension
✨ Support recovery
✨ Calm a busy mind

It's an ideal practice for anyone with an active lifestyle, whether you run, cycle, lift weights or simply spend long hours sitting at a desk. Yin Yoga can help reduce stiffness, improve movement and create a sense of balance both physically and mentally.

The longer holds also encourage mindfulness, helping you become more present and giving your nervous system a chance to slow down.

Our Yin Yoga classes at My Life Tonic are suitable for all levels, whether you're completely new to yoga or looking to complement your existing practice. You'll find a welcoming, supportive environment where you can move, breathe and simply take time for yourself.

Cold Water – More Than Just a craze? 🥶💙

Cold water has certainly grown in popularity over the last few years, but for many people it's much more than a trend.

Shannon and I first experienced cold water while training for triathlons. What started as a necessity soon became something we genuinely looked forward to—not because it got easier, but because of how it made us feel afterwards.

Whether it's a cold shower, a dip in the sea, a river, lake or a cold water tub, the benefits come from exposing your body to cold safely and consistently.

Many people choose cold water therapy to support:
💧 Recovery after exercise
💧 Improved circulation
💧 Better focus and mental clarity
💧 Increased energy
💧 Reduced stress
💧 Improved mood
💧 Building resilience

The key is to start gradually. Even 30 seconds in cold water is enough when you're beginning. As your body adapts, you can slowly increase the time you spend in the water. Research suggests that regular, short periods of cold water exposure may provide a range of physical and mental wellbeing benefits.

At My Life Tonic, we combine breathwork, yoga, cold water and sauna into one 60-minute experience.

The gentle yoga and breathing exercises help prepare your body and mind before two rounds of cold water and sauna, leaving many people feeling refreshed, energised and surprisingly relaxed.

For some, it's the cold water that first brings them through the door. For others, it's the yoga. Whatever your reason, many discover that combining all three offers a powerful way to improve both physical and mental wellbeing.
