As many of you know, we are big supporters of the charity BASICS Essex here at Maypole. Many of you haven’t even heard of them. Please give below a quick read so you can understand just how important they are.

The Unsung Hero for 2026 sponsored by Essex Freemasons goes to such a group of individual heroes - BASICS Essex.

BASICS Essex is an extraordinary team of volunteer doctors and paramedics who respond at the request of the East of England Ambulance Service, bringing advanced, life-saving care to emergencies across Essex.

Since 1973, they have made themselves available day and night, often arriving first at homes, roadsides or remote locations. Their expertise enables them to provide enhanced pain relief and, when necessary, emergency surgical interventions before a patient reaches hospital. They also deliver vital medical training, strengthening the skills and confidence of others.

This essential service receives no government funding and relies entirely on donations.

The nominator wrote: a Team of Pride Award would honour their courage and compassion, raise their profile and help ensure these quiet heroes can continue saving lives when every second matters.

Presented on Tuesday 6th October 2026, at a special star spangled award night hosted at Anglia Ruskin University Chelmsford.

We get asked a lot how acupuncture works………

🧠🌿 So, what actually happens when an acupuncture needle goes in?

If you’ve ever had acupuncture, you might have wondered…

What is actually happening underneath the skin?

From a biomedical perspective, researchers are interested in how acupuncture needle stimulation interacts with tissues and sensory nerves around the area.

Those signals are picked up by the nervous system and processed through the spinal cord and brain.

And that’s where things get really interesting.

Researchers are using modern techniques such as fMRI, EEG and PET brain imaging to explore what happens in the brain when acupuncture points are stimulated.

We’re still learning about how these signals are processed, and how the nervous system responds to acupuncture stimulation.

And there isn’t one simple answer to “how does acupuncture work?”

It’s likely that several different processes are involved.

🌿 There is still so much that science can’t fully explain about acupuncture — and I think that’s what makes the research so fascinating.

It’s an ancient practice, but we’re using modern science to ask new questions about what happens in the body and brain.

🔎 Want to explore the science for yourself?
