With the UK hitting record high temperatures this week, hitting your usual training targets can feel incredibly brutal. 🏃♂️☀️
Before you panic about your fitness, remember: your body needs about 7 to 10 days to acclimatise to a sudden heatwave. Right now, your cardiovascular system is working double-time just to keep you cool, diverting blood to your skin and away from your working muscles.
Here is the Harris & Ross game plan for training safely this week:
👉 Train by effort, not your watch. Expect your heart rate to be higher than usual at your normal pace. Drop the speed, focus on your breathing, and run by feel.
👉 Watch for joint tightness. Mild dehydration reduces the fluid that lubricates your joints, making you more prone to sudden niggles. Hydrate heavily before you train.
👉 Move it indoors. Use this week to escape the midday sun and focus on strength conditioning, core stability, or deep mobility work in a cool environment.
Listen to the heavy legs—it’s biology, not a lack of willpower!
If the sudden heat has caused your muscles to lock up or an old injury to flare, don't let it derail your summer goals. Our team is here to help you reset.
