Bramham Therapy

Bramham Therapy We specialise in counselling, psychotherapy and associated physical therapies in the two town-centres of Newbury, Berks and Marlborough, Wilts.

We offer counselling and psychotherapy for adults, couples and children for a wide range of emotional and psychological difficulties and life challenges. We are passionate in achieving a holistic view of health and therefore also offer complementary therapies such as acupuncture, massage, shiatsu and mindfulness. We have practices in Newbury and Marlborough, both ideally located in the town centres and are a haven of tranquility. Many of our therapists are experienced in working alongside mainstream medicine and the NHS. Some of our therapists offer reduced fees for those on lower incomes.

An important reminder for su***de prevention month this September. Whist the first step to helping someone is checking in, it’s important to know what you can say to continue the conversation and help someone to open up.

In our previous post, we talked about how active listening can be used as emotional first aid in conversations - what it is and why it’s important. Here are 3 ways we can practice this skill in our everyday lives.

For this month’s blog, Louise reflects on the book ‘How to Listen’ by Katie Columbus which shares tips on how to be present in conversations and listen in a meaningful way that allows the other person to open up and speak freely about their feelings. This is a skill that is not only for counsellors or listening volunteers - it can be essential for everyone when navigating conversations where someone is struggling.

Why being out of education, employment, or training (NEET) is about wellbeing, not willpower - this months blog from Louise talks about the rising levels of young people not in education, training or employment. She highlights that this is more of a systemic and mental health issue, rather than an individual lack of ‘willpower’.

In part 2, she highlights how young people can get help for this via therapy, and learn to rebuild agency and re-engage with education, training or work.

Avebury stone circles at about 5am on summer solstice☀️

Summer is here as we pass the longest day of the year on 21st of June and welcome in the summer solstice. Whilst we are all familiar with the dangers of sun exposure, it is also true that sunlight can boost mood, improve sleep, and support overall mental wellbeing.

Exposure to sunlight cues special areas in the retina, which triggers the release of serotonin - a chemical linked to positive mood, calmness, and focus. Sunlight also helps regulate the body’s internal clock, known as the circadian rhythm, which affects sleep patterns. Additionally, almost all the vitamin D in our bodies is made by exposing bare skin to sunlight. Vitamin D is necessary for the absorption of calcium to make healthy bones, and it can also boost the immune system and alleviate depression.

In summer, taking advantage of longer days by spending time outdoors, exercising, or simply sitting in natural light can support both mental and physical health. However, it’s important to balance sun exposure with appropriate sun protection.

“Sometimes, the most radical thing we can do in a fast world, is pause long enough to notice it”

Have you ever sat down to read something, only to find yourself checking your phone a few minutes later? Picked up your phone to do one thing but ended up scrolling instead? Experiences like this are increasingly common, and many people feel their attention is more scattered than it used to be.

Louise Molloy reflects on Stolen Focus by Johan Hari and gives some tips on how to slow down in a world that is moving so quickly.
