Perhaps our skin isn’t either…

Summer is coming to an end.

And whilst I’ll miss the long evenings, the warmth and that feeling that the days could go on forever… I’ve always loved September.

There’s something about a change of season that makes me pause.

To look back.
To appreciate where I’ve been.
And to think about what I might need for the season ahead.

And actually, I think our skin asks us to do the same.

Because our skin doesn’t stand still.

It changes with the seasons, with our environment, with our lifestyle and of course, as we age.

Which means what worked beautifully for your skin a few years ago might not be what it needs now.

The treatment that once gave you that incredible result.
The product you’ve used for years.
Even the way you’ve always approached your skin.

Sometimes, it’s simply time to reassess.

This is why my approach has never been about chasing the latest treatment or trying to turn back the clock.

It’s about understanding what your skin needs now.

Supporting cellular skin health.
Optimising the way your skin functions.
Encouraging resilience, repair and longevity.

And ultimately, helping your skin to age as well as it possibly can.

Because ageing well isn’t about staying in the same season forever.

It’s about understanding that every season brings something different and giving your skin what it needs to thrive in each one.

So, as summer slowly gives way to autumn, perhaps it’s a good time to ask yourself…

I think I’ve finally remembered how to have a Sunday…

You know those Sundays where you don’t really do anything?

You just… potter.

Open a cupboard and wonder why on earth you’ve kept half of what’s in it. 😂
Move things around.
Re-arrange a shelf.
De-clutter.
Faff.

And somehow, by the end of the day, everything feels a little bit better.

I realised this weekend just how much I’ve missed faffing!

For so many years, weekends haven’t really been weekends.

There’s always been somewhere to go, something to learn, somewhere to travel to, a workshop, a conference, studying, mentoring, building the business… or simply trying to squeeze all the life admin into the time that’s left.

And then there’s the laundry.

Always the laundry. 😂

My home has always been my sanctuary, but I realised I’ve been living in it rather than really pottering in it.

And this weekend I have.

I’ve organised cupboards.
De-cluttered.
Moved things around.
Made little corners feel lovely again.

Nothing particularly important.

But it has felt rather wonderful.

Perhaps this is my kind of mindfulness.

Doing something with no particular purpose other than because it makes me happy.

Then there was a gorgeous Sunday lunch, cooked by Mr S, a long soak in the bath, a G&T and fresh bed linen to climb into.

And sitting here, I had one of those little moments.

All those weekends I thought I’d lost over the years…

Perhaps they weren’t lost.

They paid for the career I dreamed about.
The business I’ve built.
The experiences.
The places.
The people.
The opportunities.

And I’m incredibly grateful for all of it.

But I think there comes a point when you have to stop being quite so busy building the life…

… and actually remember to live it.

There is still so much I want to do.

But perhaps now I want to enjoy a few more Sundays like this along the way.

The slow ones.

The faffy ones.

The ones where absolutely nothing important happens.

Except that you feel happy do nothing.

And maybe that’s rather important after all. 🤍

The chapters that stay with us …

40 years ago this week, I boarded a train from Doncaster to Guildford that would change the direction of my life.

I joined the military.

Looking back now, I often wonder what that young girl would think if she could see the life she was going to have.

The places she would travel.

The people she would meet.

The careers she would have.

The things she would learn.

The challenges she would overcome.

And eventually, the business she would build.

At the time, I didn’t realise that I was learning lessons that would stay with me for decades.

Discipline.
Resilience.
Courage.
Leadership.
Teamwork.
Adaptability.

And perhaps most importantly… how much more we are capable of when we are willing to step outside what feels comfortable.

I eventually left the military, but I don’t think we ever really leave our experiences behind.

They become part of our foundations.

I can see pieces of that young woman in the woman I am today.

She is still curious.
Still determined.
Still learning.
Still pushing herself.
Still believing there is always another chapter to write.

And perhaps that’s what 40 years of adult life teaches you…

Our lives aren’t made up of separate chapters.

They are all connected.

One experience quietly becomes the foundation for the next.

So this week, I’m not just celebrating 40 years since I joined the military.

I’m celebrating the girl who started the journey.

And the woman she became.

40 years.

It is such an honour to be invited back and one I feel genuinely privileged to accept.

Judging isn’t simply about looking at an entry on a page. It’s a rigorous process.

It’s about hearing the story behind the business.
Seeing the passion, dedication, courage it takes to build something special and recognising the therapists, practitioners and business owners who continue to learn, evolve, shine, inspire and raise the bar for our incredible industry.

If you’ve ever thought about entering an award …

Please do it.

Don’t wait until you think you’re “good enough”.
Don’t assume everyone else has achieved more than you. And don’t underestimate what you have built.

Entering an award gives you the opportunity to pause, reflect and really see how far you’ve come.

It can be incredibly positive, whether you win, become a finalist, or simply give yourself the chance to tell your story.

And believe me, after years of being on both sides of the judging table, I know how much heart goes into these entries. ❤️

Tell your story.
Celebrate your achievements.

One of the greatest privileges of what I do is knowing that clients, therapists travel to me from all over the UK and overseas.

On Saturday this happened

This beautiful therapist Andrea Hendy | Kosmetický salon , from the Czech Republic actually built part of her holiday in the UK around having a treatment with me.

We had never met before, yet somehow there was an instant connection.

Andrea, thank you for your beautiful words and for taking the time to share your experience. Your gift was so thoughtful, but your words and presense an even greater gift.

What an honour and privilege to know that someone travelled from another country, chose to spend part of their holiday with me.

Sometimes the most wonderful connections are the ones you never saw coming. 🤍

Two Andreas meet.
I’m on vacation in Warwickshire—a charming little English town. And right in the middle of it sits a salon I’d felt drawn to long before I ever stepped through its doors.
Inside, I met Andrea Simpson | Facialist.

Andrea isn’t just an amazing facialist who puts her clients’ true needs at the heart of everything she does—an approach I deeply believe in myself. She’s also someone who isn’t afraid to chase her dreams, no matter how challenging the journey, because she knows the outcome is always worth it.

Our work isn’t just about techniques or protocols. It’s about how you approach the client. With attentiveness. Without taking shortcuts. With respect for what the skin itself is telling you. That’s exactly the vibe I got from her, right from the very first minute.

It was such a pleasure to meet someone who inspired me so much in this regard—someone who shares a similar mindset.

I left with a feeling that’s hard to put into words, yet something every facialist needs to experience at some point. It wasn’t about discovering something new.

It was simply a quiet confirmation that the path I’m on makes sense.

And my skin? Rested and radiant. There are still places in the world where everything is just right.

“Experience and knowledge hold little or no value if kept to yourself; their true worth is revealed only when shared…”

I’ve always believed that the most valuable thing we can do with experience is pass it on.

A mentor is so much more than someone who gives advice. They are a trusted guide — someone who shares wisdom, builds confidence and trust, challenges your thinking and helps you see what you might not yet be able to see for yourself.

The word mentor itself comes from ancient Greek stories, where a wise friend helped shape a young hero’s life. And I think that beautifully captures what mentoring can be.

I was delighted to contribute my thoughts to the July/August issue of Vitality magazine in an important article exploring mentors — what they are, why they matter and the impact they can have on our careers.

I contributed as The Facial Mentor, sharing why mentoring has become such an important part of my own work and why I believe so passionately in sharing the knowledge and experience I’ve gathered throughout my career.

But perhaps just as importantly… I also talk about why I have mentors too.

Because mentoring isn’t about reaching a point where you know everything.

It’s about remaining curious.

Being willing to learn.

Surrounding yourself with people who challenge, inspire and stretch you.

And understanding that there is always another perspective, another lesson and another level of growth.

I feel incredibly fortunate to have been both the mentor and the mentee throughout my career — and I genuinely believe we need both.

Thank you for creating space for this conversation and for including my insights alongside those of others within our industry.

Because knowledge shared doesn’t diminish.

It multiplies.

And perhaps that is the real power of mentorship. 🤍

A rare thing happened this morning…

I had a little pocket of time between clients, so instead of filling it with another job on the to-do list, I climbed into my Slimyonik, popped on the oxygen cannula, lay back on the Bio Relax Mat and simply enjoyed some time of doing… nothing.

Well, it looked like nothing.

Whilst I was lying there, my lymphatic system was being gently supported, circulation encouraged, oxygen flowing and my nervous system given permission to slow down.

Just because something has always been done a certain way doesn’t mean it’s the only way.

We rarely question the obvious.

We sit on chairs the way they were designed.

We follow routines because we’ve always followed them.

We book treatments expecting the same experience we’ve had before.

But progress rarely comes from doing what everyone else is doing.

Every facial I create starts with curiosity.

Not…
“Which treatment shall I do?”

But…
“What does this person’s skin truly need today?”

Sometimes that means combining science with touch.

Sometimes technology with intuition.

Sometimes slowing down when the world tells us to speed up.

The best results don’t come from following a script.

They come from being willing to see things differently.

I’ve never been interested in doing things differently simply to be different. I do them differently because the best outcomes often begin with a different perspective.
