The James Cook University Hospital in Middlesbrough is one of Europe’s most modern hospitals offering a wide range of NHS district general hospital services and specialist services including neurosurgery, renal medicine, spinal injuries, major trauma, vascular surgery and cancer services. The accident and emergency department is the designated regional trauma centre for Teesside, South Durham and North Yorkshire and the hospital has a dedicated 24-hour acute admissions unit.

Congratulations to our incredible cardiology colleagues working across University Hospitals Tees who are celebrating nine years of international training in Ghana🎉

⭐Led by consultant cardiothoracic surgeon Enoch Akowuah, the life-saving training sees our dedicated colleagues give up their spare time to fly out to Ghana.

💚They deliver hands-on practical training, simulation, wet labs and interactive workshops- helping to upskill the Ghanian team to perform more advanced procedures.

⚽Ahead of England’s match against Ghana, Enoch- who grew up in Kumsai, Ghana said: “While I can't wait to watch the World Cup, my real pride lies in celebrating nine incredible years of our international training programme.

❤️“Our focus is on equipping the local team with the training and expertise needed to treat patients who would otherwise go without care.

Colleagues recently held an awareness stall was recently held at James Cook to raise awareness of sickle cell disease.

It was a fantastic success and enabled people to learn more about the disease whilst gaining an understanding of the importance of continuing to campaign for fair access to high-quality care.

The stall was held in honour of World Sickle Cell Day which aims to promote improved support for individuals with sick cell disease and celebrate the progress already made.

It’s mafting out there today. We want you to make the most of the warm weather, but there are health risks to be cautious of when it gets too hot. 🥵

Please watch out for signs of heat exhaustion in yourself and those around you. And if you do experience these symptoms, drink plenty of fluids and keep to the shade to cool down. You should start to cool down and feel better within 30 minutes.

Symptoms to look out for:

• Tiredness
• Dizziness
• Headache
• Feeling sick or being sick
• Excessive sweating and skin becoming pale and clammy or getting a heat rash, but a change in skin colour can be harder to see on brown and black skin
• Cramps in the arms, legs and stomach
• Fast breathing or heartbeat
• A high temperature
• Being very thirsty
• Weakness

This week, we brought together a massive range of local charities, support groups, businesses, and internal teams to look after our incredible staff with exclusive offers and expert advice.

💬 Marie Weedall, a health care assistant on the post anaesthetic care unit said:

"I visited several stalls, including smoking cessation, well-being advisors, and the fantastic legacy nurses... It was fantastic to see so many teams in one place.”

Well done to our learning disability teams for introducing care bags for patients with a learning disability, which is helping to reduce anxiety and distress for these patients in our urgent and emergency departments.

The initiative is designed for patients with a learning disability who attend the emergency department (ED) at The James Cook University Hospital and the University Hospital of North Tees, who may find the environment stressful and overwhelming.

Each care bag contains a mix of comfort objects such as fidget items, noise-cancelling earphones, eye masks, sensory chew bracelets, colouring pencils, sensory items, visual aids, sensory-friendly items and information resources.

The initiative has also been extended to include patients who are admitted to wards.

Since its introduction, the learning disability teams have received positive feedback from carers and patients at both hospitals.

Specialist nurse learning disability Elizabeth Dixon said: “We know patients with a learning disability or autism struggle in our busy emergency department. Our goal is to improve their experience by offering a care bag when they access our emergency departments. As well as providing patients with useful resources to reduce the stress of being in a hospital environment, the care bags also contain information to empower the patient during their journey in our care.”

The AFFECT trial is a national heart surgery trial involving more than 30 centres across the UK, being led by researchers at James Cook Hospital.

Thousands of people in the UK have surgery for mitral regurgitation each year, a common heart condition where the mitral valve fails to close tightly, allowing blood to leak backward into the atrium instead of pumping forward to the body, which forces the heart to work harder.

Patients who also have heart rhythm issues often require blood thinning medication to reduce their risk of having a stroke or other complications after surgery.

The trial, which hopes to recruit 1,282 adults who are having mitral valve repair surgery at cardiothoracic centres across the UK, aims to identify the safest and most effective blood thinning treatment to use after the surgery.

Professor Enoch Akowuah, the chief investigator for the AFFECT trial at University Hospitals Tees, said: “The AFFECT trial will provide high-quality evidence to guide national treatment decisions and improve long term outcomes for patients across the UK and internationally.”

More than 130 patients have already signed up for treatment, with the research assessing a range of outcomes including stroke prevention, quality of life and cost-effectiveness.
