What if your path doesn’t need to be forced?
I have been thinking a lot about Wu Wei, the Taoist idea often translated as effortless action or action without forcing, and somehow it feels deeply connected to the Fire Element and the Heart.
For a long time I believed that following my path meant trying harder. I needed more discipline, more determination, more certainty, more effort. If something wasn’t happening, I assumed I needed to push a little harder. I even have a book with lots of complicated diagrams about being more organized… never read though 🤣 It took me a really long time to realise that there is a very big difference between moving towards something and forcing myself.
The Heart has its own intelligence. Sometimes it knows before the mind has found the words. Sometimes it wants to move forward, sometimes it wants to pause, and sometimes what looks like a lack of motivation is actually a very wise request for rest. I am learning to listen to these differences rather than immediately turning everything into another task. And with my own practice and with my clients we discover what it really means to follow own path. And the answer usually is less about becoming someone we have imagined ourselves to be and more about becoming quiet enough to recognise what is already moving through us.
The Five Elements remind me that there is a season for everything: Earth receives, Wood reaches, Fire expresses, Metal releases and Water rests in the depth. None of them needs to do the work of the others.
Maybe our work is simply to listen for which season we are in.
