Hot weather can sometimes become dangerous, especially for older adults.

It is important to look out for changes such as:

• Feeling dizzy or faint.
• Headache.
• Tiredness or weakness.
• Nausea or loss of appetite.
• Excessive sweating.
• Muscle cramps.
• Confusion or unusual behaviour.
• Fast breathing or a fast heartbeat.

If someone seems unwell in the heat, help them move somewhere cooler, encourage them to drink, cool their skin with water or a damp cloth, and seek medical advice if you are concerned.

Heatstroke can be a medical emergency, especially if someone is confused, has a very high temperature, loses consciousness or has a seizure.

At Home Instead, our Care Professionals are there to offer regular support, reassurance and a watchful eye, helping older adults stay safer at home during warmer weather.

What is dementia?

When a parent starts forgetting things, repeating themselves, or seeming less confident with everyday tasks, it can be difficult to know what is happening.

Dementia is not one single condition. It is a term used to describe a group of symptoms that affect how the brain works. This may include changes in memory, thinking, communication, decision-making, mood and behaviour.

It is also important to know that dementia is not a normal part of ageing.

Everyone forgets things from time to time, but dementia causes changes that begin to affect daily life. A person may struggle to follow conversations, manage routines, remember recent events, find the right words, or feel unsettled in situations they once found familiar.

At Home Instead, we know how worrying these changes can feel for families. But with the right understanding, care and support, people living with dementia can continue to feel safe, valued and connected at home.

If you are concerned about changes in someone you love, speaking to their GP is a good first step.
