Learn how to protect your eyes whilst watching the partial solar eclipse!

We probably shouldn’t have to say this, but don’t look directly at the sun. Looking directly at the sun without the right protection can cause permanent damage to your eyesight – so you need to take care. Remember, your normal sunglasses may look great, but they won't cut it.

Why do I need good eyesight for driving?

Driving requires your full concentration. You need to be able to see clearly what’s coming up, while also processing threats from the side, and scanning your mirrors. It is important to have good visual acuity, so you can see sharply in the distance, and good visual fields, a phrase describing your ‘all round’ or peripheral vision.

If you have concerns about your sight or simply haven’t had an eye test in the last two years, visit your local optician. An eye test can help you drive more safely, protecting both yourself and others.

A solar eclipse is an incredible sight, but looking directly at the sun without the correct protection can cause permanent eye damage in just seconds.

Before viewing the eclipse, make sure to use ISO 12312-2 certified eclipse glasses or another approved solar viewing method. Ordinary sunglasses, smoked glass, CDs and homemade filters are not safe and will not protect your eyes.

Please take a moment to read our eclipse safety guide and help keep your family and friends safe by sharing this important information.

Thank you, J.A Hicks
